History

[edit]

I've restructured the article to make it flow better, and tried to add in more historical detail. However, there is disagreement between various sources, and it could do with some more definitive input to raise it from stub status. Some points to clarify:

  • The National Trust website says that the College was founded in the 13th Century. According to the church website, it was established in 1194.
  • The wording on the NT site and the Bristol Architecture article imply that these early dates refer to building the main College, with the gatehouse being added later. However, a ten-year construction period is a bit long for a single gatehouse. Probably the whole complex was built (or rebuilt?) from 1459-1469, with the gatehouse as an integral part. My guess is that the College as an institution was set up earlier (see point above), but previously occupied a different site, or at least different buildings. Are there any sources to clarify this?
  • The church website that the Hobhouse family owned the college in 1769 and by 1779 had built a large residential house or mansion. The plaque says that a Georgian house had been built by 1771. The Images of England site says that the building dates from 1709 (before the main Georgian period), but lists a number of Tudor features. The church website then said that the house burnt down (in the 60s?), being replaced by Westminstere Court. It would be good to sort out which of these snippets of information relate to the current building adjoining the gatehouse tower, and which to destroyed buildings on the rest of the College site.

I also removed the reference to John Wycliffe, as although he was associated with Westbury, he lived a century before the gatehouse was built and hence isn't relevant. It might however be worth writing a historical article about the College itself, rather than just the gatehouse.
