Workhouse Comment[edit]

Seeing User:Tony Holkham's recent edits I was drawn to the 1898 25 inch map [1]. It shows the West Hampnett Union Workhouse as well as disused brickworks. A quick search came up with [2] and [3] which has already been used as a source. There seems to be a problem with the Battle of Britain ref link.SovalValtos (talk) 20:49, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

To editor SovalValtos: Many thanks for that. I am still working on the article (as time permits) and I'll follow up your suggestions. Concering the Union, it was the name given to a much bigger area than the parish (cf Westhampnett RD), but if the workhouse was within the parish boundary it will be worth including. I was also led to believe there was a hospital for lepers (near the church?) in the parish, but so far I have not been able to pinpoint this. I'm very familiar with Westhampnett and thought the article could do with a lift. Tony Holkham (Talk) 21:02, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I will try not to interfere until you are finished. I have found in the past that 'A vision of Britain' is not always a reliable source. In this instance it shows different boundaries to the OS [4]. If there are any photos needed I might be able to help as I will be in that area perhaps as soon as Thursday.SovalValtos (talk) 21:45, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
"Interference" will be very welcome, as always. As for photos, the Coach and Horses if it still stands, and the school. The article is too short (so far) for much more illustration. I will, though, look (properly!) through the BHO ref with a view to finding some earlier history. Tony Holkham (Talk) 22:03, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
To editor SovalValtos: I should add that, if you have the time, climb the Trundle (you can park on the south side near the top by going anticlockwise round the hill and down a short lane) above the racecourse and you will have a superb panoramic view of the parish, and well beyond. It is one of my favourite views in the whole of England, provided that the weather is kind. In addition, the motor circuit is open to visitors most of the time. After edit conflict: Do you need a photo of the modern school in Claypit lane or the old one opposite the end of Claypit Lane at the junction with Stane Street? The overlay satellite image on NLS suggests the Coach and Horses and smithy have buildings in the same positions as the 1898 map. There must be plenty more to expand the article with all the other settlements and interesting geology with gravel pits alongside clay pits.SovalValtos (talk) 22:54, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As you think best. Both schools for comparison would be interesting. I don't see the article as a major project for me, but something to keep working on at leisure. Tony Holkham (Talk) 09:01, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
