There has been discussion on some user talk pages (diff1, diff2) about whether the WMHI is located in the City of Oshkosh or in the unincorporated community of Winnebago, Wisconsin in the Town of Oshkosh. By looking at Winnebago County Geographic Information System data, (and using this Google map for reference) I've deduced the following as of February 2010:

  • Simple answer: All the hospital buildings are located on land owned by the State of Wisconsin within the City of Oshkosh. The Winnebago Mental Health Institute is located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in an area that was formerly a part of the unincorporated community of Winnebago, Wisconsin.
  • More confusing additional info:
    • Several tiny plots of land right along County Route A between Butler and Pickett Avenue are unincorporated and a part of the Town of Oshkosh. These plots are immediately adjacent and to the west WMHI. This is where the "Winnebago, Wisconsin" post office is located. The Winnebago Mental Health Institute has a mailing address of "PO Box 128, Winnebago, Wisconsin"—this is where that post office box is.
    • The "State Hospital Cemetery" and "Winnebago Correctional Center" located just to south of the WMHI are located in the Town of Oshkosh on land owned by Winnebago County.
    • Some unoccupied plots of land to the northwest and southwest of the WMHI are LOCATED within the City of Oshkosh, but OWNED by the Town of Oshkosh, for use by the Town of Oshkosh Sanitary District. (I guess this isn't relevant, but I wanted to add another layer of confusion.)

Hope this helps. I'm going to attempt to edit the article to reflect this.--BaronLarf 13:55, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks-This is helpful-RFD (talk) 14:23, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Even more confusingly, the Town of Oskosh, including the former portions of the township now the City of Oshkosh, started out under the name of the Town of Winnebago! --Orange Mike | Talk 18:46, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting... that sort of thing could go in that town's article.--BaronLarf 22:31, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
