This company may not be well know, but it is notable for several reasons: It was typical of companies during the dot.com bubble, which has had a lasting impact on soceity. It was typical of wall street reseach, which resulted in the global settlement which helped make Eliot Spitzer famous, and it was typical of the kind of business that Lucent was involved in, which ultimately led to that company's demise. Winstar built out the whole first floor of 200 Paul Ave (Data center in SF, CA). One of the benefits of these overbuilding dot-com-bubblers was the infrastructure they left behind. Facebook now rents our half of the ex-Winstar facility -- like generations of plants in the biosphere, Facebook -- arguably -- could not exists without Winstar's rotting corpse: a flushed out Data Center ready for rent on the cheap.
