Early comment[edit]

Hi there! I'm a certified trainer in the telecommunications business, and noticed a real lack in Wikipedia for information about using cellphones as data modems. I created this stub page to fill that gap. It is on its route to graduating from stub status, but it needs your help:

  • wikipolish
  • proofreading
  • more native information

Content which might be helpful on this page would be

  • Some leads on how to obtain service for Internet usage from major Wireless carriers in the USA, Europe, and other locations
  • Some more information on cellphones which make good data modems for PC's, whether connecting to the PC via Bluetooth or USB cable.

Welcome and enjoy the work.

Monty

I regret to inform you that this article has failed. The main reason is that it is a stub. And worse it is of little importance. Funpika 20:22, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Service Providers[edit]

I would create a wikitable with the providers classified by country, access ways (mobile phone, PCMCIA Card, USB modem, all) and speed (GPRS, 3G, 3.5G). --Nukeless 20:32, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

No, wikipedia is not a directory. Such a list would be a spam magnet and out of date quickly. W Nowicki (talk) 21:50, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Already exists on the mobile broadband page. This page is about the product, not the service. --True Tech Talk Time (talk) 02:37, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are wireless modems secure[edit]

I was looking for a new modem the other day but the computer shop only had wireless modems (they said only place I'd get a plug in one is an antique shop) which scares me as they don't seem too secure, I have concerns over other people accessing my computer via the wireless modem. Is this justified? I don't see anything on the page on security of wireless modems so can someone comment on it? Thanks AllanHainey (talk) 12:51, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stomp Box (wireless router)[edit]

This article refers to Stompbox, a "homebrew" wireless router for 3G/wifi networking. It contains two links to the article on the other sort of stompbox, which is an acoustic guitar effects pedal. I have removed the offending links. If Stompbox WWAN routers are not going to be thoroughly discussed on this page, then a separate article needs to be written and both should be disambiguated.Nametag (talk) 01:57, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Using a PC as a cellular phone[edit]

The article should include details on if these wireless modems modems (or a specific subset), combined with a PC (what OS), software phone (what software), SIM with proper call plan (allowing calls), would allow you to make standard cellular phone calls (not VoIP). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.210.84.9 (talk) 15:13, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

I propose that Wireless modem be merged into Mobile broadband modem. I think that the content in the Wireless modem article can easily be explained in the context of Mobile broadband modem, and the MBM article is of a reasonable size in which the merging of Wireless modem will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned. Also, the term "mobile broadband" already has its own page to clearly define the subject. Such a term is much more descriptive than "wireless modem", which can simply signify a dial-up/DSL/cable/FTTH modem with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi capabilities built in. --True Tech Talk Time (talk) 02:37, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
