Changes

[edit]

We've been trying to make various edits to the XCOPY page, at the request of the artist, and they are being deleted. These revisions include updates to numerous factual inaccuracies, as well as spelling/grammar errors. We do not understand why these changes are being reverted, as they do not seem to go against any of the cited reasons (poorly sourced content, basic copyediting, non-neutral point of view, use of primary sources, etc.).

Examples of incorrect information include: city where artist is located, random statements without support (i.e. credited as introducing Beeple to NFTs), date of Grifters launch, sale price of Right-click and Save As guy, spelling of 'Right-click and Save As guy', sales details of MAX PAIN, spelling of MAX PAIN, and others.

Please allow us to implement these changes without deleting/reverting them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Noone.eth (talkcontribs) 07:10, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Edits are being reverted because of the mentioned reasons. The current version of the page is supported by stable WP:RS, and any fact or statement with no WP:RS is not eligible to stand on a Wiki page. Your version of the article seems to read more like an advertisement than an article. Cryptocurrency News, Journals and Twitter are generally not considered reliable sources, except in exceptional cases. Editing sale prices has little to no value due to Cryptocurrency extreme volatility, perhaps it's suggested to go with the closest USD amount at the time of the sale. And paid editing has to be disclosed. JohnnyCoal (talk) 08:57, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Our edits are supported by RS, including primary sources from art platforms such as Async Art that include direct contextual quotes from the artist, as well as Etherscan transaction links for specific sales that show the exact dollar value of sales on the day of the transaction(s) as recorded on the blockchain. We also removed numerous inaccurate/unsupported statements that are included without RS. We are attempting to correct factual inaccuracies in this Wikipedia page, and are working with the artist to ensure accuracy, because we would like to see the page contain accurate information. None of this editing is 'paid editing'. We identified numerous factual inaccuracies in our prior post unsupported by RS (date of collection sales, spelling of artworks, sales figures, etc.). We do not see any valid reason to oppose/revert these changes, particularly when we are providing RS for each and proving that the information on the current version of the page is factually inaccurate. Regarding other sources as RS, given that Cryptocurrency News Articles and other sources contain accurate factual information on the matter, in contrast to the currently cited sources containing inaccurate information, we believe this constitutes an 'exceptional case.' As it stands, the current version of this page is riddled with factual inaccuracies, and we are being prevented from correcting them and making the page factually accurate. Edits are being once again reverted due to repeated usage of WP:TTD, WP:TMBS and WP:PRIMARY. Please refer to the five pillars of Wikipedia for a better understanding of editing and news eligibility. 07:05, 2 June 2022 (UTC) JohnnyCoal (talk) 07:05, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Johnycoal, we have tried to make sensible and accurate changes to this wikipedia page but you continuously revert them back with inaccurate information. For this reason I have proceeded to report User Johnnycoal for edit warring via the WP Admin Noticeboard for obstructive repeated deletion of accurate and proper edits in favor of inaccurate content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Noone.eth (talkcontribs) 10:07, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Which makes no sense at all, considering Admins can clearly see you are the only one here coming up with the repeated usage of non-encyclopedic edits. Good luck 16:02, 19 June 2022 (UTC) JohnnyCoal (talk) 16:02, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What stable reliable sources is this article based on? Looks like a bunch of questionable sourcing, none of which discusses the subject in-depth Slywriter (talk) 17:36, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted this article to the latest stable version

[edit]

There weren't seem to be any issues with this article prior to the edit war, so I have reverted this article to the latest April's stable version by User:Notcharizard, which includes WP:RS like Fortune (magazine) and others, and doesn't read like an NPOV advertisement anymore. Please feel free to improve it, change it or correct it. Thank you! JohnnyCoal (talk) 12:35, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

CC0 License Clarification

[edit]

Before restoring or applying any edits, I'd like to point out that the artist himself has made clear that some of his work, mentioned in the article, are released under a CC0 (Public Domain) license; please find evidence below.

CC0 - No Rights Reserved (Public Domain) explanation: https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/public-domain/cc0/

https://twitter.com/XCOPYART/status/1484608880080572416 - "Right Click Save as: Public Domain"

https://twitter.com/xcopyart/status/1502422283746488320 - "Grifters are now CC0"

More sources/tweets confirming what stated above:

https://twitter.com/XCOPYART/status/1529497348950343681 https://twitter.com/XCOPYART/status/1522945777017970692 https://twitter.com/XCOPYART/status/1545366644565966850 https://art.haus/best-cc0-nft-projects/ - search "XCOPY"

There are more sources and statements, but I hope these will be enough to help clarifying the artist's intention on his CC0/Public Domain releases, in order to revert the edits on the page and permanently approve the 'Right-Click Save as' file on Wikimedia Commons. Thank you. JohnnyCoal (talk) 11:46, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know whether tweets from an unverified account of "Right Click Save as: Public Domain" and "CC0 POWER" would be sufficient for Commons to confirm that a particular image had been explicitly released into the public domain by its anonymous creator. --Lord Belbury (talk) 12:00, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
An official announcement was posted just a few minutes ago: XCOPY has officially made all of their art CC0 (public domain). Feel free to read it all here. https://twitter.com/XCOPYART/status/1554112748816109569 15:05, 1 August 2022 (UTC) JohnnyCoal (talk) 15:05, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also very clearly stated by artists on official website that work is CC0. See https://xcopy.art Maxand98 (talk) 00:47, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Upcoming edits

[edit]

Hi all, I am conducting some scholarly work on Digital Art and Xcopy in particular and am hoping to add some information on this page to give back as I have been using wikipedia a great deal so far. Am still learning wikipedia so am happy to be guided by mods. I have no affiliation to artist and this is upaid work. :) Maxand98 (talk) 23:12, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This statement may seem biased, but these are the words used by the study and not sure how to frame. Looking for guidance from mods: Xcopy's work was chosen as some of the most prestigious and successful crypto-art by curators and fellow artists. [5] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxand98 (talkcontribs) 00:45, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The article you're referencing is a primary source, I'd suggest referring to WP:SCHOLARSHIP, particularly that we should "rely on secondary sources whenever possible".
The study also doesn't say the work was chosen as some of the "most...successful crypto-art by curators and fellow artists.". The curators and artists in the study only rated the perceived quality of the work and were explicitly asked not to factor in success: "Moreover, we invited all actors to make their choices regardless of the market success of the artworks, evaluating only the intrinsic quality of the works". This highlights one of the common problems of editors trying to interpret primary sources instead of reporting what reliable secondary sources say.
The study only included works published in the "SuperRare gallery" and doesn't support the much broader claim you have.
Also, please see WP:LEDE, particularly "Apart from basic facts, significant information should not appear in the lead if it is not covered in the remainder of the article." JaggedHamster (talk) 20:23, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am still working on the article, and will add a further section to address this comment Maxand98 (talk) 22:44, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jagged Hamster, thanks for your comments. I will do some further reading on RS. Please do not wholesale delete many hours of work en masse, but raise the issues in this page and I will update. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxand98 (talkcontribs) 21:08, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

JaggedHamster before mass reverting please see WP:Reversion policy particularly this line:
'Reverting multiple non-contiguous edits[edit]
Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the person reverting edits on the page to be sure that any intervening helpful edits are not reverted, or unhelpful edits re-applied to the article.' Maxand98 (talk) 22:58, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, the sentences you quote aren't in the page you link, you're after WP:REVERT. The only intervening edits were from a bot fixing up your maintenance tags and from an IP editor I assume was you as they added an image you'd just uploaded.
Of your edits, you've:
- Added content to the lede which isn't included in the body of the article, against WP:LEDE.
- Added citations to unreliable sources such as decrypt.co, nftnow.com, rightclicksave.com and so on. Wikipedia:Notability (cryptocurrencies) is an essay with some useful points about sourcing in this area.
- Inappropriately used primary sources, please read WP:PRIMARY and WP:SCHOLARSHIP.
- Added a lot of content you've immediately flagged as citation needed. If you don't have a citation for it please don't add it.
- Added entirely empty sections.
- Added content under "All Time High in the City" and "Coin for the Ferryman" which seems like WP:OR and isn't sourced.
- Added biographical information with no sourcing such as them being born in 1981 and having British nationality, which given the artist is anonymous I'm not sure how you know.
- I'm dubious about the copyright status of the image you've uploaded. Per [1] the mural is presumably copyright protected and it wasn't created by XCOPY.
Given all the above, I'm comfortable reverting your additions was appropriate. Please find reliable secondary sources covering this topic and use them for adding content, and stop adding unsourced and poorly sourced content. JaggedHamster (talk) 14:12, 15 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Before proceeding, JaggedHamster do you accept the assertion that the artist has made the work CC0? 202.151.32.64 (talk) 20:39, 15 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
