Titles

[edit]

Should the individuals here not be listed by their title when they served as Chancellor of the Exchequer rather than their final title? Most lists of Chancellors will list them by the title they held at the time, and except under extraordinary circumstances, the Chancellor is never a peer. I think this has the potential to confuse. For instance referring to Sir John Anderson as 1st Viscount Waverley is potentially very confusing. If you came across a reference in a book to a Sir John Anderson who was chancellor and were looking for an article on a Chancellor called "Anderson", it is not obvious that Waverley is the individual. Moreover he did not become Viscoutn Waverley until 7 years after he had ceased to be chancellor. The same problem applies to others - it is not obvious that Michael Hicks Beach is 1st Earl St Aldwyn nor that Stafford Northcote is who is referred to here as 1st Earl of Iddesleigh. I really think it would improve navigation if this were changed. Dunarc (talk) 22:59, 10 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As I have said at Template talk:Chancellors of the Exchequer, the template Template:Chancellors of the Exchequer is very similar to this one and it makes me wonder if we really need both of them? Dunarc (talk) 19:00, 14 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
