Brackets

[edit]

What is the purpose of the square brackets? In the right context they might make sense, but I think usually they look weird. It's definitely the wrong look for when this template gets used by Template:SMILESCAS. What am I missing? Ntsimp (talk) 21:13, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The CAS number standard is displayed between two square brackets, I hope this explains. --Dirk Beetstra T C 21:31, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The article CAS registry number neither mentions nor uses this convention, although a web search shows it is common in papers. I think it would be better to leave the brackets out of the template and let editors bracket if they choose. What do you think? Ntsimp (talk) 21:49, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, could be, indeed. Though then it should be added in the document as [{{CASREF|123-45-6}}] and not as {{CASREF|[123-45-6]}} (as the former does have as a possibility to use the number as a parameter in a (external) link, whereas the former gives problems there. Having the square brackets added by the template does make them all the same. However, most CAS-numbers are in {{chembox new}} anyway, which does the same. But it is food for thought. --Dirk Beetstra T C 09:26, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
