[edit]

@Hike395 recently added a web.archive.org prefix because GNIS is offline for now. This prefix should be changed to https://web.archive.org/web/2020/ to use HTTPS and for a less cluttered URL (because the specific capture date isn't going to be the same for all pages, excessive precision is just confusing, especially if no capture actually exists (example with an invalid/made up ID)).

Note that this change has no actual impact on whether the links work (though it may choose a slightly different capture), as the URL will redirect to the closest available capture in both cases. For instance, 20200725013858 currently redirects to 20200804075517 but 2020 redirects to 20210501125839; it seems to prefer captures close to the end of the given year (so using 2021 will choose the most recent capture, which might be a redirect to the offline page). As a note, using "1" will prefer early captures (though I think it's choosing captures at the end of 1999) and "2" will prefer the most recent capture; neither of these are ideal for this use case. --Pokechu22 (talk) 01:46, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Cite Gnis2 problem

[edit]

The second {{Cite gnis2}} template on Vindication Island links to https://edits.nationalmap.gov/apps/gaz-domestic/public/summary/8078 when it should link to https://edits.nationalmap.gov/apps/gaz-antarctica/public/summary/2826003. Specifying |type=antarid causes it to point to an archived webpage, instead of the correct URL. Checking Template:GNIS URL which controls the URL it seems like there is no way to link https://edits.nationalmap.gov/apps/gaz-antarctica/public/summary/2826003 through these templates; can it be changed so that it does? Or at least point to the correct template? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:05, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Description of suggested change: Link retired features to Knowledge Explorer interface for GNIS-LD, the official RDF distribution of GNIS. Unlike the Wayback Machine archive of the old GNIS site, GNIS-LD includes all the features from all the retired classes. This interface also includes some metadata that used to appear on the old GNIS site but no longer appears on The National Map.

Unfortunately, the documentation for {{GNIS}} suggests tagging {{dead link}} if the Wayback Machine didn't archive the old feature page. Someone may want to go through and remove those tags manually as a result of this change.

The interface works for non-retired features as well, but it isn't as user-friendly as The National Map, so it might be a good idea to link both sites or make it switchable via a parameter.

 Done Excellent idea! — hike395 (talk) 03:42, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mxn: is there a way to get the Antarctic features, also? Those are also no longer available at the National Map. — hike395 (talk) 03:50, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hike395: That particular dataset doesn’t include the Antarctic features. I’m not sure if there’s a corresponding RDF dataset, but there is an ArcGIS dataset from HIFLD, an official federal government program. Unlike GNIS-LD, this dataset is no longer being updated. By the way, GNIS-LD isn’t a static snapshot of GNIS. When I checked back in September, I encountered “retired” features that reflected The National Map Corps edits from just that week. Minh Nguyễn 💬 04:43, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
