Could you remove the word link "pronuciation" or "listen" from the visible form of the template, and leave only the loudspeaker icon with a link? That word breaks the flow of the text, and works as a "parentehsis inside a parenthesis". Compare

The science of foobarlogy ([fu:barloʒi] listen) is concerned with how foo evolved into bar...

with a version where the "listen" is a hover text, like

The science of foobarlogy ([fu:barloʒi] listen) is concerned with how foo evolved into bar...

or maybe even with the IPA too in the hover text, as in

The science of foobarlogy listen is concerned with how foo evolved into bar...

Not done Please seek and establish consensus at WT:LEAD or somewhere appropriate before requesting edits. The speaker icon links to the file description, which provides the required attribution, while the "listen" text links to the file itself, which reduces users' effort. It may be reasonable to do away with the parentheses if possible in some cases, but not all IPA notations appear inside parentheses. Nardog (talk) 00:45, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Jorge Stolfi: I added a new "attribution=no" option to the template so that audio files that don't require attribution (e.g. CC0) can be linked to with a simple speaker icon. Kaldari (talk) 16:14, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
