Default search prefix parameter

[edit]

I changed the default search prefix parameter from {{FULLPAGENAMEE}} with {{FULLPAGENAME}} so that this template will work with topic names of more than one word. The search doesn't like the "_" characters in the URL form of a multiple word title. --stmrlbs|talk 22:24, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How can I add more than one "prefix"?

[edit]

Since archived deletion discussions can be found under several lemmas, we need to add more than one prefix. Can anyone help? --217.238.157.233 (talk) 22:02, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give me an example where this has happened? The convention is to archive the discussions under the name of the talk page with an archive subdirectory.--stmrlbs|talk 22:25, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Talk page? I'm not sure what you mean. Look here for more infos. (The IP is me) --217.238.151.29 (talk) 22:08, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot about the conversation here. Rainman added a mod to be able to search multiple prefixes. I updated the documentation, and created a template for searching all the deletion discussions.. and will move it from my user space as soon as I figure out where it should go. Not sure.. --stmrlbs|talk 01:27, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Searches more than just archives?

[edit]

I noticed a discussion thread (User_talk:2over0/Archive_3#searching_archives) which said this searched the page and the archives. So maybe the button should say "Search talk page and archives" instead of "Search talk archives"?

Actually, this will search any page that it is placed on, and any "archives" - or subdirectories - associated with it. For instance, if you put this on a user's main page, then it would search the User main page, and all the User's subpages. example, if you were to place it on Jimbo Wales' User page, it would search his user page and these pages. If you put it on your talk page, then it will search your talk page and all the talk page archives - which are really subdirectories of the talk page. The most common use of this template is to search the talk page and associated archives, but perhaps a name that encompases more of what it can do would be better. Perhaps "Search this page and archives". Or something like that.
But I'm not quite sure what the procedure is for changing the name of a used template. Do you move the page, then update all the pages that use this template? --stmrlbs|talk 06:48, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This search template currently only searches the subpages of the page it is placed on. It does not search the page itself. I have tested this on my user page. --Timeshifter (talk) 01:06, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Broken?

[edit]

It's not coming up with any results when I tried this on Talk:Roman Catholic Church. I assume that the same mechanism powers the search box behind Talk:Jehovah's Witnesses and so forth (which also failed). ...but what do you think? ~BFizz 05:47, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is working for me on the archives I have tried it on today. So maybe the changes in the ensuing years have fixed the problem. --Timeshifter (talk) 01:08, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

More ways to use this search template

[edit]

See User:Timeshifter/Sandbox43 and the wikitext used for it. Other archive linking templates can be used inside of that box beside {{Archive list}}. For example:

It can be used to search other archives too. Not just archives for talk pages. I currently use some of this wikitext to search the archives and subpages for my user page. See the top of my user page.

Various outer boxes can be used such as

Search button text can be modified too. See above examples. --Timeshifter (talk) 02:48, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
