Group D after matchday 4
[edit]After matchday 4, the ranking of this group is: 1. Poland (10p), 2.Germany (7p, GD=+3), 3.Scotland (7p, GD=+1), 4.Republic of Ireland (7p, GD=+7). I don't know how Republic of Ireland could be ranked after Germany and Scotland despite their goals diffrence is higher than those 2 countries? Phannhuhai (talk) 08:40, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
- When teams have the same points the goal differential does not matter, it is the matches amongst the teams and Ireland has lost both to Germany and Scotland. The classification rules is stated below the table. QED237 (talk) 13:09, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
Gibraltar cannot directly advance
[edit]It is now mathematically impossible for Gibraltar to finish 1st or 2nd. How would this be indicated on the table? GarethTJennings (talk) 21:03, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
- @GarethTJennings: I added an status text to explain the situation. Not sure if theyh can still be best third-placed team or not. Qed237 (talk) 00:11, 14 June 2015 (UTC)
Can Georgia make 2nd?
[edit]Should Georgia be marked with y? ["Cannot qualify directly as one of the top two teams, but may still qualify as third-placed team"] Poland play Ireland - if either wins, they pass 15 [the most Geogria can get] and if it's a draw, then Poland have 15 - and then Poland would beet Georgia on head to head. Is there some 3 way tiebreaker they can win? 90.218.114.205 (talk) 23:02, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
- actually lets work that out. If Poland-Ireland is a draw, the only way Ireland can make exacly 15 is to also draw there other two games, [12+draw+ any win passes 15] but they play Georgia, so there can't be a Poland-Georgia-Ireland tie. In a Scotland-Georgia-Poland tie at 15, Scotland would have 7 points [wins+draw vs poland, win vs Georgia], Poland 7 points [2 wins vs geogria, draw vs Scotland], and Georgia only 3 [one win vs Scotland] - so Georgia wouldn't make 2nd in that one. Unless I've missed something, Georgia should therefore be marked win y. 90.218.114.205 (talk) 23:08, 4 September 2015 (UTC) editted 23:10, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
- They can be second and here is how:
- Ireland win against Poland and lose against Germany and Georgia, with 12pts now and one win = 15pts.
- Poland lose all their matches (Ireland, Gibraltar, Scotland) and stay on 14 pts.
- Scotland win against Poland and lose against Germany and Gibraltar, with 11 pts now and one win = 14 pts.
- Georgia win all three remaining matches, with 6 now and 3 wins = 15 pts.
- We have two teams on 15 points, Ireland and Georgia, with Ireland winning the first match with 2-1, so if Georgia win with two goals they can be ahead of Ireland in second place. Qed237 (talk) 23:19, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
- They can be second and here is how:
- Oops - I somehow got "Ireland+3 = >15". So ye - I agree with you. 90.218.114.205 (talk) 23:24, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
- No problem, easy to make mistakes with all those numbers. I am happy that you started a discussion before editing so that we could sort this out. Have a nice day. Qed237 (talk) 00:27, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
