Update

[edit]

Can someone give me an overview on how to update the progress so I don't explode the whole template? :) --Brad101 21:02, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brad. I've just seen your message. In order to update the table you need to count how many articles there are in each month. (No idea if there is an automated way to do this. I just count the amount of pages with 200 articles on, then add on the extra on the last page)
As well as knowing the amount for each month, you also need to work out the running total. Ie today it is:
April - 165 articles
May - 1354 articles , running total 1519
June - 1254 articles, running total 2773 etc.
 • When you go into the template you need to update the date (if necessary) in line 42.
 • Then from line 46 onwards is where you need to put the actual numbers. For the examples above you need to add the following:
 bar:April2006
 from:0 till:165 text: "April 2006: 165 articles"
 bar:May2006
 from:165 till:1519 text: "May 2006: 1354 articles"
 bar:June2006
 from:1519 till:2773 text: "June 2006: 1254 articles"
So that the first two numbers are the start and end of the range for that month. (So the running totals at the end of the previous month, and at the end of that particular month) then in the "April 2006: XXX articles" you need to put the actual amount of articles. (That's the text that will display on the chart.)
 • Finally, there is also a total bar, and you have to change it so it reads from:0 till:TOTAL NUMBER OF ARTICLES text:"Total: TOTAL NUMBER OF ARTICLES articles remaining".
I hope this makes sense, but feel free to ask if I've confused you. If all else fails, have a play with it, and just do previews without saving. -Ladybirdintheuk 10:37, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if the template really needs the "update" link in the middle. Updating it isn't entirely straightforward, and the "e" button at the top right already leads to the edit page. When I clicked the "Update" button originally, I assumed that it would have been automatic. Also, it breaks up the lines. Salad Days 18:29, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I originally put that there as there was no template bocx and it was easy. I suppose it could go for now - feel free to remove --Errant Tmorton166(Talk)(Review me) 19:09, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Updates

[edit]

How frequently does this chart need to be updated? Is our usual method of once daily good enough or should we embrace this "whenever I see the number change in a month" update? Metros232 12:33, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that once or twice a day (maybe even 3 times) is fine. I don't see the need for a constant "I've wikified 2 articles, must now update the chart" though. It seems to waste time, which could be spent wikifying a third article, or getting more beer/coffee :) -Ladybirdintheuk 13:54, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Color Scheme

[edit]

Would anyone mind if I changed the red and green bars to shades of gray instead? It looks a little bit busy. Salad Days 22:27, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Updates...again

[edit]

After over two weeks of this...I'm wondering what people think of updating it every...2 hours with one edit per month. I'm feeling it's not very useful. I like being able to track our total progress and get a better view of how much we go up or down in a day. Any one have thoughts? Metros232 23:43, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And Again, Updates

[edit]

We should really make a bot that updates this at least once a day Flubeca 19:40, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would be willing to run this, but I would need some help writing it. Stwalkerster talk review 17:50, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck

Hello

I am Lucy, I have found your website while searching for some info at Google. Your site has helped me in a big way.

Category page counts

[edit]

I'd be happy to do updates regularly, but I'm wondering if there's a way to get the total page counts in each category (like Category:Wikify from November 2007) returned... or even just get it listed on a single page somewhere, then it can easily be parsed. The tough part is just getting that data... after that, it's easy to update. I'll look into this, but any ideas in the meantime? --SesameballTalk 06:50, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

CbmBOT currently updates Category:Cleanup by month once a day. Its proposed successor, StatisticianBot, currently updates the Wikipedia:Good article nominations/Report page daily, but an earlier proposal was to see it update Template:Copyedit progress (a template more similar to Template:Wikification progress). I'm not sure why this proposed task didn't happen: one brief attempt at bot automation was attempted, but otherwise Template:Copyedit progress had been updated manually until its last update in September.
Dragons flight's Category tracker performs a similar task, with more specific statistics. However, this bot hasn't updated its statistics since August. Dragons flight was for a brief time inactive, but is now active again, so I'm assuming this bot is defunct.
In any case, I still think CbmBOT or StatisticianBot would be better for updating this template. Both bots are maintained by Dvandersluis. I'll ask him to see if either of these bots, or else another bot, could be used to update this template. Cheers. – Liveste 13:42, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Change template format?

[edit]

Does anyone else feel that the template is becoming slightly too large to be useful in its current format? Going on current trends, it looks as if we'll end up with over 12 month's worth of "Wikify by date" backlogs by about February or March in 2008. Currently there's a lot of empty space on the template and the bars are getting smaller. I doubt that the template was originally designed for such a large backlog.

I'm asking because Dvandersluis has asked for a detailed method for updating this template, in preparation for designing a bot that could update it automatically. It'll take him a while to get it done and get bot approval, and I'd hate for him to program a bot for this template, only to find out that the template is being changed. I should get back to him in a week or two. Any thoughts? – Liveste (talk) 06:43, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Update

[edit]

Wow, I've procrastinated on this! (Okay, I forgot all about it. In any case, I think I owe Dvandersluis an apology.) But now that we have two March categories in the backlog, I think it's time to change its format. I tried experimenting with the graphical layout but got nowhere. Instead, I'd like to see the template changed into a table, which would be much easier to update – although it wouldn't be as appealing, perhaps. An example code is as below, following Category:Cleanup by month.

As of 05:23, 4 March 2008 (UTC), 14,316 articles were tagged for wikification.
Month # of Articles
March 2007 457
April 2007 928
May 2007 1,307
June 2007 1,185
July 2007 930
August 2007 966
September 2007 1,011
October 2007 1,200
November 2007 1,673
December 2007 1,537
January 2008 1,270
February 2008 1,704
March 2008 148
Total 14,316

I'll cross-post this discussion on the WikiProject talk page. Please feel free to leave comments on either page. If no-one seriously objects to the change, I'd like to change the format on my next update on Tuesday (UTC). Otherwise, please discuss. Cheers. Liveste (talkedits) 00:22, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done, with minor changes. Further discussion is on the WikiProject talk page. Please feel free to leave comments there. Cheers. Liveste (talkedits) 10:46, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
