This route was cancelled on June 15, 1935.[2] On October 22, 1935, it was restored, but going from Belton to Valley Mills.[3] On January 18, 1937, SH 153 was cancelled.[4]
The current route was designated on May 16, 1988, replacing FM 53.[1][5]
