The Martian is a 2015 American film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Drew Goddard. The film stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña and Kristen Wiig. It is scheduled to be released on November 25, 2015. The film is based on the 2012 novel The Martian by Andy Weir.

Production

In March 2013, 20th Century Fox optioned the film rights, and hired screenwriter Drew Goddard to adapt and direct the film.[1] In May 2014 it was reported that Ridley Scott was in negotiations to direct an adaptation that would star Matt Damon as Mark Watney.[2] On September 3, Jessica Chastain joined the film for the female lead.[3] On September 16, Mackenzie Davis joined the film's cast for the small crucial role.[4] On September 17, Kate Mara was offered for the female lead role in the film, Jessica Chastain and Kristin Wiig were also in eyes for the role.[5] On September 24, it was announced that Michael Peña was in early talks to join the film, which actor is interested but his involvement would depend on his schedules.[6] On October 2, Jeff Daniels joined the film to play the director of NASA to deal the crisis.[7] On October 10, Donald Glover and Aksel Hennie joined the film, both would play young NASA employees.[8] On October 20, Sean Bean joined the film to play a NASA flight director.[9] On October 23, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sebastian Stan and Mackenzie Davis joined the film's cast, Ejiofor would play Venkat Kapoor, the Director of the Mars Mission.[10][11]

Filming

Filming began on November 10, 2014 in Budapest.[12][13]

Release

The film is scheduled for release on November 25, 2015.[14]
