"The Time"
Song

"The Time (Dirty Bit)", also known as "The Time (The Dirty Bit)", is the first single from The Black Eyed Peas' sixth studio album The Beginning set to be released November 26, 2010. Written by will.i.am, apl.de.ap and DJ Ammo, the song samples the 1987 single "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" from the film Dirty Dancing, and was released digitally on November 5, 2010.

Background

After will.i.am tweeted: "Who wants me to drop the new Black Eyed Peas single off The Beginning earlier than we should???"[2] he posted the song on dipdive.com.[3] Group member Fergie noted the song's coincidental relation to Dirty Dancing actress Jennifer Grey's appearance on Dancing with the Stars: "... that song reminds me of [Grey] and Dirty Dancing and that whole time".[4]

Composition

The chorus of "The Time (Dirty Bit)" samples "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", originally performed by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes in the 1987 film Dirty Dancing.[5] The song features group members will.i.am and Fergie singing and rapping over a dance and techno beat.[4][6][7]

Critical reception

Simon Vozick-Levinson of Entertainment Weekly praised the song's catchiness, but felt it failed to meet the standards of previous singles "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling".[8] Franke Previte, who won an Academy Award for writing "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", complimented The Black Eyed Peas' sample usage, saying, "It just reconfirms to me that the song is cross-generational. The song has now crossed over to the next generation in a huge way."[9] Willa Paskin of New York, however, criticized the choice of sample and was disappointed with the chorus, feeling it was "shoehorned into the rest of the song".[7] Digital Spy's Nick Levine gave a review of three stars out of five, said that the song "sounds like the result of a piss-up in the recording studio". He dislikes many elements that constituted the song, and was confused at the meaning of "dirty bit".[10]

Music video

The music video was released on November 23, 2010 through its channel Dipdive and Vevo. Was directed by Rich Lee.

Chart performance

"The Time (The Dirty Bit)" debuted on the Canadian Hot 100 at number eighty-seven the week of November 5, 2010.[11] The song also debuted at number forty on the Billboard Pop Songs chart the next week and has currently peaked at number twenty-eight.[12] Two weeks later, the song climbed to number one in Canada, the third time the group has achieved this, selling 31,000 downloads that week.[13] The song debuted at the top position on the UK Dance Chart as well as number two in New Zealand.[14][15] While the song debuted at number ten in Australia, it reached number one in its second week.[16] On the singles chart for Ireland, the Netherlands, and the UK, the song has peaked within the top ten.[17][18]
