Theodore Peter James Kinnaird Taptiklis (born 16 December 1984) is an English actor, known for portraying the role of Tobias "Four" Eaton in the film adaptations of The Divergent Series. He played Jed Harper in the supernatural television series Bedlam (2011), Detective Walter William Clark, Jr. in the crime-drama series Golden Boy (2013), and David in the films Underworld: Awakening (2012) and Underworld: Blood Wars (2016).[1]

Early life

Theo James was born on 16 December 1984, in Oxford.[2][3] He grew up in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.[4] He is the son of Jane (née Martin), who worked for the National Health Service, and Philip Taptiklis, a business consultant.[5][6][7] James has two older brothers and two older sisters.[8][9] His paternal grandfather was Greek (he moved from the Peloponnese to New Zealand).[10] His other ancestry is English and Scottish.[8]

He attended Aylesbury Grammar School and went on to earn his undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Nottingham. He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.[2][3]

Career

Acting

James made his television debut in A Passionate Woman, starring opposite Billie Piper.[3][11] He played Turkish diplomat Kemal Pamuk in an episode of the first season of Downton Abbey.[12] James starred in Bedlam, playing the lead role of Jed Harper. He appeared in the 2012 adaptation of John Braine's Room at the Top as Jack Wales.[13]

His film credits include You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and The Domino Effect. James was cast in Stranger while still in his final year at drama school. He played James, an obnoxious night club rep, in The Inbetweeners Movie. In 2011, James was chosen to play the character of David in the fourth installment of Underworld: Awakening, released in 2012, opposite Kate Beckinsale.[14]

In 2012 he appeared in ITV's Case Sensitive starring Olivia Williams and Darren Boyd. He was named a "Star of Tomorrow" in 2009 by Screen International.[15]

In 2013, James starred alongside Chi McBride in the American drama series, "Golden Boy" which aired for one season. [16]

James played the male lead, Tobias "Four" Eaton, in the film adaptation of Veronica Roth's Divergent (2014).[17] James reprised the character in the sequel to Divergent, The Divergent Series: Insurgent,[18] which began filming in May 2014 and was released in March 2015.

In 2015, he became the brand ambassador for Hugo Boss fragrances for men, appearing in print ads and commercials.[19]

James starred alongside Amber Heard, Billy Bob Thornton and Jim Sturgess in the film adaptation of London Fields,[20] and in the indie drama Franny, alongside Richard Gere and Dakota Fanning.[21][22]

He returned in one more Divergent film, The Divergent Series: Allegiant (2016). He reprised his character David in the fifth Underworld film, that time as the film's male lead.[23][24]

Music

Outside his acting career, James was the singer and guitarist of the London-based band Shere Khan.[25]

On 21 November 2012, the band announced on their Facebook page that they were no longer actively playing as a band and that members would be pursuing other musical endeavours.[26]

Personal life

James has been in a relationship with Irish actress Ruth Kearney since around 2009.[27] James met Kearney while they were students at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.[28]

He does not have any social media accounts.[29]

In June 2016, James travelled to Greece with UNHCR, where he met Syrian refugees and learned more about the situation for refugees.[30][31]
