Toba (鳥羽市, Toba-shi) is a city in Mie Prefecture, Japan.

Toba is the site of the Toba Aquarium, which houses such animals as dugongs, African manatees, porpoises, and a wide-variety of aquatic life.

Toba is the hometown of Mikimoto Kōkichi, who developed a method to cultivate pearls, and Tokushichi Mishima, who invented MKM steel. Kokichi Mikimoto's Memorial Hall is also located in Toba. It is known as Mikimoto Pearl Island.

History

The city was founded on November 1, 1954.

Since ascent times, the area has been known as a nice port with deep water and mild wave.

During the 14th to 16th century, the area was under the control of pirates, from whom emerged Yoshitaka Kuki(from Nakiri district) as a dominant ruler. After having dominated over all areas, he established Toba as the capital and built a castle there. In the Edo period of 17th to 19th century, Toba flourished in trade and as a connecting port between Osaka and Tokyo(Edo).

Coastal areas of this city have been hit by several tsunamis with around 3~6 meters in history.
