Tooheys Old is a dark ale type of beer produced in Australia by Tooheys. It has been brewed since 1869 and Tooheys began bottling it in 1970.[3] It has 4.4% alcohol per volume while only containing 132 calories.[4] It is on tap in many bars in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, South Australia and Queensland and it is more commonly available in the country areas. It is made with top fermentation ale yeast, lightly hopped with black malt giving it a very dark, almost blackish, colour.[5] At the pub, it is commonly ordered as Black. This is also not to confuse the bartender with XXXX Gold, as people order "Gold". Rather than saying "Old", they say "Black".
The beer was formerly known as Tooheys Hunter Old Ale.[6] Many people, seem to have the saying that Tooheys Old is newer than Tooheys New. Whether this is because Tooheys Old was not widely distributed till the 70's or branded at Tooheys Old, we don't know. And the lighter coloured lager was commonly consumed a long time before that.
It is one of the only two Australian mass-produced beers to earn a mention in The Great Beer Guide[7] (ISBN 0-7894-5156-5) along with Dogbolter.
