"Torn" is a song by American singer Ava Max. It was released on August 19, 2019.[1][2] Max teased the song as the next single from her upcoming debut studio album, as a follow-up to her single "So Am I".[3] The music video, directed by Joseph Kahn, was released on August 27.

Background

In a press release, Ava Max said that the song "explores the struggle" between love and hate, which she called "two of the strongest emotions we feel in relationships".[4]

Critical reception

Billboard described the track as a "disco-infused dance track where the star sings about the internal struggle of wanting to lebyve, while also wanting to stay with her lover".[5] The Fader felt that the song is "ABBA-esque".[6]

Music video

The music video was directed by Joseph Kahn and released on August 27, 2019. It was considered to be "superhero-themed".[7]

Promotion

Ava Max teased the song in the caption of a video posted to Instagram, asking her fans if they knew the name of the song she was about to release.[3] Fans soon found a pre-order link for the single,[3] with Max then sharing the cover art and a snippet of the song.[8]
