The University of Paris-Saclay (French: Université Paris-Saclay) is a French federal research university which is currently under development. The project is part of the research-intensive and business cluster Paris-Saclay, located near Paris in the Plateau de Saclay.[5][6] The University of Paris-Saclay is expected to be the training and research center of the Paris-Saclay technology cluster, similar to Stanford University in the Silicon Valley and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Israel.

The University's first academic year started in September 2015.[7]

Mission

According to Dominique Vernay, chairman of the foundation developing Paris-Saclay, the university aims at a top-10 slot in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, but "the first goal is to be the top university in continental Europe".[6] The university wants to maximise the economic and business potential of its research, partly via university and research spin-offs, but also by working closely with established companies.[8]

Ranking

University of Paris-Saclay is still under its integrative process, therefore not yet appearing in any of the international rankings. However, in an independent simulation of the Academic Ranking of World Universities made in 2014, the university scored 39.8 (or 43.2 if all Research Organizations are counted, see bellow for more details), ranking the university in the 27th position (resp. 21st).[9]

In future, University of Paris-Saclay cluster could help France to secure a space amongst the elite Top-10 universities of the world and would help to bring the education and research system of France into lime light.[10]

Setup

Université Paris-Saclay will combine resources from the following universities, grandes écoles, research organizations, and the Systematic Paris-Region cluster:[8]

Research Organizations

This Research Organizations are currently independent of any University or Grande École. Once the University of Paris-Saclay is fully integrated, they should have a similar status to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the Caltech.

  • CEA (Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission)
  • CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research)
  • Inria (French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation)
  • INSERM (French Institute of Health and Medical Research)
  • Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies)
  • INRA (French National Institute for Agricultural Sciences)
  • ONERA (National Board of Study and Aerospace Research)
  • SOLEIL (a synchrotron facility)

Academic programmes

The trainings of the different institutions will be brought together in 8 schools, following the Anglo-American model.:[12]

  • Biodiversity, Agriculture and Food, Society, Environment (Biodiversité, Agriculture Et Alimentation, Société, Environnement) ;
  • Biology, Medicine, Pharmaceutical studies (Biologie, Médecine, Pharmacie) ;
  • Law, Political Science (Droit Et Science Politique) ;

  • Sport and Human Motion Sciences (Sciences Du Sport Et Du Mouvement Humain) ;
  • Basic Sciences(Sciences Fondamentales) ;
  • Social Sciences (Sciences Sociales).

Each school will organize trainings in a given scientific field. Students will have access to all schools, no matter what university or grandes école they are enrolled at. Altogether, 49 Master's degree will be offered.[13]

Moreover, the University will have 20 doctoral schools.[7] Doctoral diplomas received after September 30, 2015 will be awarded under the name "University of Paris-Saclay", with a mention of the university/grande école the student is registered at.

Research programmes

The University of Paris-Saclay will gather more than 300 research units.,[14]

organized into 10 departments  :

  • Chemistry (Chimie)
  • Electrical engineering, optics and electronics (EOE: Ingénierie électrique, optique et électronique)
