Kurt Keutzer is an American professor, computer scientist and executive.

Early life and education

Kurt Keutzer grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana.[2] He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Maharishi University of Management (formerly Mararishi International University) in 1978.[3] He earned a PhD in computer science from Indiana University in 1984.[4]

Career

Keutzer joined Bell Labs in 1984, where he worked on logic synthesis.[3] He joined the electronic design automation company Synopsys in 1991, where he was promoted to Chief Technology Officer.[3][5] Keutzer went on to join University of California, Berkeley as a Professor in 1998.[3]

Keutzer's research at Berkeley has focused at the intersection of high performance computing and machine learning. In particular, Keutzer and a number of graduate students at Berkeley developed FireCaffe, which scaled the training of deep neural networks to over 100 GPUs, and later with LARS and LAMB optimizers, they efficiently scaled deep neural network training to over 1000 servers.[6][7][8][9] Keutzer and his students have also developed deep neural networks such as SqueezeNet, SqueezeDet, and SqueezeSeg, which can run efficiently on mobile devices.[10]

Keutzer co-founded DeepScale with his PhD student Forrest Iandola in 2015, and Keutzer served as the company's chief strategy officer.[11][12] DeepScale was focused on developing efficient deep neural networks that could run on an affordable budget of computing hardware to enable advanced driver assistance systems in passenger cars.[13] In October 2019, CNBC reported that Tesla has purchased DeepScale.[14]
