Washed Up Emo is an American music blog and podcast founded by music enthusiast Tom Mullen.
History
[edit]Washed Up Emo was formed by Tom Mullen in 2007 as a blog website. Tom Mullen, who worked at marketing for Equal Vision Records at the time, started when the mainstream attention for emo was rising.[1]
"I thought, 'These fucking bands are messing with their hair, they're cutting themselves, they’re wearing goth clothes, and they’re calling it 'emo,' except they only know Hawthorne Heights and Fall Out Boy. I couldn’t find anything online about Sunny Day Real Estate or Mineral or American Football, so I said, 'Let me do it.'"
—Tom Mullen[2]
According to Mullen, he said that the purpose of creating the site in 2007 was because the misusage of the word of emo, where bands were to be described as emo due to their clothing and rather not the music they played.[2] He also claimed that there was a lack of information online of early emo bands from the 90s and the information being forgotten.[1]
Early years of the site used Blogger and Mullen posted with a pseudonym, "pierre wentz." Early posts of the site were angry rants about emo and mainstream bands.[1][3]
