Wheein

[edit]

Jung Whee-in is a South Korean singer and dancer. She is best known for being a member of popular K-pop girl group Mamamoo, in which she debuted as part of in June 2014. She released her debut single as a solo artist, "Easy" featuring South Korean rapper Sik-K, in April 2018. Her debut EP Redd was released in April 2021, followed by a second EP Whee in January 2022 and her debut studio album In The Mood in October 2023. Wheein is one of the most successful artists of all-time, with over 25.03 million song units amassed as of July 2024.[1][note 1]

Career

[edit]

Wheein debuted in 2014 as a member of Mamamoo, serving as one of the group's lead vocalists and dancers. Over the group's 10-year career, she has been recognized as the group's best dancers and one of the best dancers of K-pop's third generation of artists.[2] In April 2018, she released her debut single as a solo artist, "Easy" featuring South Korean rapper Sik-K. Her second single, "Good-Bye", produced by Jung Key, was released in September 2019 and followed by her debut extended play Redd in April 2021. The EP's lead single, "Water Color", was met with critical acclaim and became a sleeper hit by early 2022.

In 2021, it was announced that Wheein had declined to renew her contract with RBW, only staying with the label for Mamamoo group activities. That same year, she signed with rapper Ravi's record label TheL1ve. In January 2022, she released her first project under said label, the EP Whee and its lead single "Make Me Happy". Her debut full-length album In The Mood was released to critical acclaim and commercial success in October 2023. The album opened at number-one on the Genesis Hot Albums, scoring the largest opening week for a female artist and for any artist in over a year.[3] The success of the album and its lead single of the same name earned Wheein a Genesis Triple Crown, in which she topped the artists, albums, and songs chart for the week.[4] "In The Mood" debuted atop the Genesis Hot Songs, with 41.5K units sold in its first week, and the album's ten other songs occupied the following ten positions, making Wheein the first artist to achieve the feat.[3]

Impact

[edit]

With over 14.85 million song units earned as a soloist, Wheein is one of the most successful artists of all time.[1] She is the 21st most-streamed artist on Genesis, with 1.485 billion on-demand streams as of July 2024. In 2023, she was the 12th most-streamed artist on Apple Music; In The Mood was the year's best-selling album, with over 900,000 units moved.[5] She has 21 RIAX-certified songs, including the double-platinum "Water Color" (2021) and two other platinum songs. On the Genesis Hot Songs chart, Wheein has earned three number-one entries—"Water Color" (2021), "Make Me Happy" (2022), and "In The Mood" (2023)—and in 2022 became only the fifth artist to replace themselves at the top position.
