The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) is an international organization dedicated to improving education outcomes and access in developing countries.[1] GPE collaborates with governments, international organizations, civil society groups, and the private sector to ensure quality education for all.

History

[edit]

In 2011, GPE, originally known as the "Education for All – Fast Track Initiative" since its founding in 2002, was rebranded and established as a Financial Intermediary Fund. By November 2023, donors had contributed $7,855 million to the fund. GPE has now emerged as a response to the pressing need for coordinated efforts to address educational challenges in developing countries.[2]

Since its inception, GPE has evolved into a key player in the global education landscape, working tirelessly to ensure that every child receives a quality education.

Governance

[edit]

The 20-seat Board of Directors of GPE has six sets of representatives from low-income countries, six donors, three seats each for multilateral agencies and regional banks, and five seats each from the private sector, foundations, and civil society organizations.[3]

Over the years, GPE has been led by dedicated individuals who have contributed to its growth and impact. Laura Frigenti is currently at the helm. Laura Frigenti is recognized for her profound commitment to advancing education worldwide, leveraging her expertise to drive innovative initiatives and foster partnerships for sustainable change.[4]

GPE cooperate with a diverse range of partners, including governments, multilateral organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. 82% of the world's out-of-school youth reside in the 87 countries that GPE partners with.[5] The partnership consists of countries committed to supporting education initiatives in developing regions. The organization collaborates with a wide range of donors, leveraging their support to fund impactful projects and initiatives. The main donors of GPE are the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United States, Norway, France, Germany, Australia, Denmark, Canada and Sweden. Saudi Arabia recently joined as a partner, demonstrating its commitment to advancing education globally.[6]

A remarkable collaboration include the appointment of Rihanna as a GPE Ambassador for 2016-2018, raising awareness and advocating for global education issues.[7]
