Every nation has inherited its great forefathers' customs, traits, characteristics, values, attitudes, and beliefs. Each country has its unique qualities, and the Philippines is no exception. Even though we have been colonized by several countries, many of our ancestors' beliefs have survived and are still revered today. Filipinos aren't perfect, but we do have certain outstanding characteristics and qualities that we should all be proud of. The underlying ideals of our ancestors have survived and are still alive today.[1]
Filipinos are known for their Bayanihan spirit, which is defined as a spirit of communal work and cooperation toward a common goal. The image of men carrying a Bahay Kubo, or traditional nipa hut, reflects the concept of Bayanihan, which is strongly rooted in the country's past. As you may be aware, Bahay Kubo used to be the primary kind of housing in rural areas of the Philippines.
Being hospitable is one of the most well-known characteristics of Filipinos. Regardless of where they're from, how well they know their host, or why they're visiting someone's home, guests can expect a warm welcome from their hosts. No one leaves the Philippines with an empty stomach. Before leaving, guests are encouraged to take home "pasalubong", or presents, which are often delicacies and local sweets.
Filipinos are known to have strong family ties. This is why it’s common to see different generations or multiple families living in a single residence. The family is at the center of the Filipino community. Traditional families also close their small businesses so long as they get to set aside time to see their family members.
Filipinos have high regard for their elderly, including their parents, and "pagmamano" is one way to show respect, as well as saying "po" and "opo" when attached to a sentence addressing someone, are signs of respect. Another one of the great characteristics of Filipinos is their being resourceful and industrious. They are determined to achieve their set goals despite difficult circumstances and limited resources.
Revolutions, wars, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, typhoons, and epidemics have all struck the Philippines at various points throughout history. They just bend but never break in the face of tragedy. It goes with the wind, but it never breaks, just like a bamboo tree. It's tough and powerful, just like a Narra tree. Whatever tragedies it faces, it will overcome them.
