Folder Size is a Windows disk space analysis tool written by MindGems. The product is freeware and uses an explorer like interface that can show data as either a pie chart or bar graph. According to PCWorld.com the product is a little more cumbersome than necessary to shift views and can be slow in scrolling for refreshing but overall was considered to be better then another freeware alternative because it had better functionality and provided more information. [1] It is compatible with all Microsoft Windows versions including the latest Windows 8, Windows 7 and all Windows Server operating systems and their corresponding 32 and 64 bit versions.
Functionality
[edit]Folder Size will analyze the file and folder sizes on a computer or network including their sub-folders in order to help with the disk cleanup and analysis tasks. It support Hard drives, CDROMs, USB Drives, Floppy disks and all other types of external storage that is available via Windows Explorer. The application displays the files and folders in the scanned locations in a table that can be sorted by various file properties like size, date, time etc. It also provides visualization using Pie or Bar charts that can be used for navigation. The collected data can be exported to multiple file formats including images, plain text, PDF, TIFF, HTML, XML or Microsoft Excel formats. A context menu item "Scan with Folder Size" is available in the Windows Explorer context menu for easier access to the tool's features. The command line interface of the tool provides options for automation and can be used to schedule periodic scans using Windows Task Scheduler.
History
[edit]Folder Size was developed in order to meet the lack of folder size information in Windows Explorer. As the application is free and has plenty of users a lot of new features were requested and implemented turning Folder Size into a real file and disk management tool with plenty of different reports.
Editions
[edit]Folder Size is available at no cost and provides basic file size reporting and Windows Explorer integration. The Professional and Personal Editions of Folder Size (shareware versions) offer extended search functionality. The Personal Edition offers most features of Folder Size Professional, except that it will not run on Windows Server, it doesn't support network drives, it can't be controlled by the command line interface and it does not provide export options.
