Anthony A. Kipps
[edit]Mr Anthony Alphaeus Kipps, Ambassador for Persons with Disabilities [1] (born August 13th, 1998)[1] is a Trinidadian Public Figure who served as a Youth Leader at London's 2012 International Inspiration program.[2] He is also a public speaker, social motivator and Youth of the Year 2011. Mr Kipps is also a law student at the University of the West Indies and has attained a Certificate in Business Management from the same institution.[3] Mr Kipps has been diagnosed with a disability known as Right Primary Focal Femoral Dysplasia, which means his right leg is shorter than his left.[4] Additionally, he is a Youth Ambassador that placed third in the CNMG individual of the year.[5]
Education:
[edit]Anthony Kipps was a student of St. Joseph Secondary School[6] for five (5) years from 2010 to 2015 and obtained six (6) CXC or CSEC Passes. After this Mr Kipps studied Business Management at the University of the West Indies Open Campus for the period 2015/2016. He graduated from the University Open Campus in 2016 with a Certificate in Business Management.[7] He continued his studies at the University of the West Indies and is pursuing a Bachelor of Laws Degree.
Achievements & Personal Life:
[edit]Anthony Kipps' journey to success began in 2010 when he started to attend St Joseph Secondary School formerly known as Curepe Junior Secondary. He was a very active participant in school activities. Anthony was actively involved in his school's Student Council and engaged in other school activities such as the school BBQ and in the Steel Ochestra. The school hosted a walkathon for diabetes once a year which he always took part in and walked from start to finish despite the weather. He went on to become Vice-President and then President of the Student Council. Before that Anthony served as a representative of the Youth With a Purpose Foundation (YWAP) to the Student Council. The Youth With a Purpose Foundation was a charitable organization set up by Chis "Tambu" Herbert a then music teacher at the school and former calypsonian. The purpose of YWAP was to provide assistance financially or otherwise, to students of St. Joseph Secondary School that were in need of such assistance. By way of illustration, it would provide students in need of books, food, uniforms, shoes, etc. with these amenities to alleviate the burden on themselves and their family.
Anthony Participated in school activities such as these and many more. Eventually, he was nominated by Mrs Joseph-Alexander, a science teacher at the school, for the Youth of the Year Award and the National Youth Award for special Circumstances and Disabilities. Anthony Kipps went on to win both awards. The Youth of the Year Award was presented to Anthony by the them Minister of Gender Youth and Child Development, the Rt Hon. Verna St Rose Greaves. According to an article published in the Trinidad Express, he said to the newspaper in an interview "I know I would have won the disabilities award but I didn't think I'd get the Youth of the Year."[8] He also said in an interview with the Trinidad and Tobago Newsday, “They judge you by how many things you do in school and in your community ... how you help people. I do everything in school. I helped in a cookout and a gospel concert and I play steelpan - tenor, bass and double tenor.”[9]
Later, Anthony was nominated by Lucia Nero-Giles, a Physical Education Teacher at St. Joseph Secondary School, because of his consistent volunteer work and achievements on International Inspiration and in other spheres of school life. He is a popular young leader and role model in his school where he is involved in planning and delivering sports events, swimming, music and more recently paralympic sport.[10] He carried the Torch for Trinidad and Tobago in the 2012 Paralympic Torch Relay. In another interview with the Trinidad and Tobago Newsday he said "I can’t explain what it was like to run with the torch! I was ecstatic, with everyone waving and cheering! It was amazing to meet Oscar Pistorius. Like me, he has a disability to his legs, but he is an amazing athlete and it makes me think that I can be successful and that it’s good for me to keep trying new sports. He is someone who has gone out there and done it. At home in Trinidad, doing sports is very important and I like being part of that with International Inspiration"[11][12] Another article stated that from nominees across the UK and 20 other countries, Anthony was chosen because of his determination and commitment to inspiring young people in his community through sport.[13]
Anthony went on to receive an award from the Tunapuna-Piarco Regional Corporation for academic contributions. The Award was presented by the then Chairman of the Corporation the Rt Hon. Senator khadijah Ameen He gave a speech for the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, and participated in their first annual Law Enforcement Conference. For this contribution, Anthony received an award of Recognition from the Police Service. His latest speech was for Scotiabank's Women's Network (Scotiabank Trinidad) in 2017.[14] Anthony also took part in the 2014 Queen's Baton Relay running alongside Her Excellency, First Lady Reema Harrysingh-Carmona of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the then British High Commissioner, Arthur Snell.[15]
