ATK Mohun Bagan is a professional football club based in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The new club will come into existence on June 1, 2020, by the merger of ATK FC and Mohun Bagan AC.[2] It plays in the Indian Super League under licence from the All India Football Federation. The club is owned by Kolkata Games and Sports Pvt. Ltd. (80%) and Mohun Bagan Football Club Pvt. Ltd. (20%).[3][4]

History

[edit]

In 2018, FSDL, the organiser of ISL, planned to include the 2 Kolkata giants, East Bengal & Mohun Bagan in the competition. So, it was decided that the existing Kolkata based franchise, ATK, would merge with one of Mohun Bagan.[5] But, the plan was put on hold, since, later that season, all the I-League clubs, jointly protested against AIFF. In 2019, after the Indian football roadmap was published, and it was decided that ISL would be the 1st division league, the merger plan was reworked and finalised, and on 16th January 2020, owners of ISL side ATK, the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group bought 80% of shares in the club, with the current owners of the club left with the remaining minority stake of 20%.[6][7] It was announced that the new club will function from the next season, i.e. 2020-21 and will play in Indian Super League from Kolkata.
