Synopsis

[edit]

The subject of the documentary was on the Great March of Return, a series of weekly peaceful demonstrations held by Palestinians living in Gaza from March 2018 till December 2019. The concept of the March was devised by journalist Ahmed Abu Artema, who wrote the question “what would happen if thousands of Gazans attempted to peacefully cross the fence that separated them from their ancestral lands?”[2]

The documentary presents different first hand accounts of those living in the Gaza strip, highlighting the living conditions of the Palestinians who have been under a blockade since June 2007[3], which has impacted their livelihoods. It illustrates how there is a shortage of clean drinking water, food and how the Palestinians living in Gaza are unable to rebuild their infrastructure damaged by Israeli bombs due to the Israeli government prohibiting material to come into the Gaza strip which would help rebuild the damaged homes and infrastructure.

The documentary also presents first-hand accounts of those who took part in the marches and injuries they were inflicted with. It illustrates some of the international laws that Israeli forces committed during the marches, including the protection of children during war and conflict (UN Geneva convention Article 77[4]), the protection and rights of people with disabilities (Article 11 of UN convention on rights of persons with Disabilities)[5], targeting of journalists (Article 79 Geneva Convention, protocol 1), targeting of medical staff (Article 15 of Geneva Convention) and the use of unidentified chemical gas (which is banned under the chemical convention).

The documentary also depicts the death of Rouzan al-Najjar, a Palestinian nurse who was shot dead on June 1, 2018, by Israeli Defence Forces whilst attempting to aid to some demonstrators who were injured near the fence, and highlights how her killing came about.
