Samuel Sené, born on 18 May 1982 in Pithiviers, Loiret, is a theatre director, musical director, pianist et french conductor .

He has won 2 TCM (Trophée de la comédie musicale) for best director for his musicals Comedians! in 2017 and Schrodinger's Man in 2019.

Biography

Samuel Sené obtains his baccalaureate at the age of 14S[1], the agrégation in mathematics after the École normale supérieure de Cachan where he entered at the age of 17 in 1999.. He became the youngest agrégé in France in this discipline.[2].

He studied music first at the Conservatoire d'Orléans and then at the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional (CNR) in Saint-Maur, where he won first prizes in piano, accompaniment and conducting.


He first worked in Paris for the Opéra-Comique and Châtelet national theatres, then in Brazil with the São Paulo State orchestras. He has conducted numerous operas and operettas, such as Carmen, Orpheus in the Underworld, Hamlet, La Belle Hélène, Death in Venice, Norma.... He also conducts many popular events, including the official Star Wars concert at the Grand Rex and the Jules Verne Festival concerts.

As a composer, he received support from the Fonds de Création Lyrique de la société des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques (SACD) for his opera Le dernier jour[3], and wrote the arrangements of Richard Wagner's Phantom Ship and Dom Juan for the Nouvelle Troupe Lyrique. He composed the music for the ballet Derviche mon amour[4],[5] , and the incidental music for plays such as Roméo et Juliette[6] and Dom Juan. His versatility also takes him into the field of film music and variety: arranger for Sabine Paturel, pop-symphonic shows, Universal audiovisual programmes, etc.


He then turned his attention to Anglo-Saxon musicals and was musical director for Fame (musical), Fiddler on the Roof, Rendez-vous, West Side Story, Next Thing You Know, Oliver, Damsel Fantasy, and on tour in 2018-19, Into the woods[7]. He is also the educational director of the Musidrama workshops. Founder of the West End Frenchies, a federation of Francophile musical theatre in London, he is musical director of Voulez-vous sing with me tonight and the musical Pinot at the Colour Theatre, also in London.


His dual musical and theatrical training has enabled him to direct operas (Tosca, Orphée et Eurydice[8], Paillasse[9]…), musical shows (Contes sans frontière at the Théâtre des Célestins[10], the 2008-2009 editions of the Cérémonies des Marius, and the 2012-2013 editions of the Ville en lumières Festival of the city of Troyes[11]), musical theatre creations such as Légendes parisiennes, #hashtags, Flop, Jack l'ombre de Whitechapel, and Week-end ! ... or theatre such as La leçon de Ionesco at the Mouffetard and Lucernaire[12] theatres. In 2018, he created the musical Comédiens! which he presented at the Théâtre de la Huchette. The latter received five trophies for the musical, including those for best libretto and show, and best direction[13].


The coronavirus crisis pushed him to go off the beaten track, and he directed the very first French virtual choir, The Show Must Go On, which was seen more than ten million times on media and networks around the world. He created C-o-n-t-a-c-t, a remote theatrical experience 2.0[14], which met with immediate success and was exported in several languages and a dozen countries, including London[15], Rome, .... He directed La flûte cyber-enchantée at the Opéra de Vichy, using all the new video, streaming and videoconferencing technologies for a hyperconnected and interactive show[16].
