Though both churches are called “Orthodox”, they are separate branches of Christianity who are not in full communion with one another. The name "Orthodox" along with the distinguishing terms "Eastern" and "Oriental" being synonymous had led to the two traditions being confused with one another.
History
[edit]Both the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches were part of the Early Church along with the Catholic Church. Before the 3rd Eccumenical Council of Constantinople resulted in the East-West Schism, dividing the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox, the Council of Calcedon resulted in the split of Oriental Orthodoxy with the preceding body
