Overview
[edit]EURO is a nonprofit organization domiciled in Switzerland. It aims at the advancement of knowledge, interest and education in Operational Research by appropriate means, particularly by the exchange of information, the holding of meetings and conferences, the publication of books, papers, and journals, the awarding of prizes, and the promotion of early stage talents. The members of EURO are national Operational Research Societies which are full members of IFORS and originate from Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Its affairs are regulated by a Council consisting of representatives of all its members and an Executive Committee which constitutes its board of directors.
Governance
[edit]Full membership is restricted to national Operational Research societies which are Members of IFORS and do not belong to any other regional grouping of IFORS. Member societies appoint one representative and one alternate to form the EURO Council. Each member society has one vote at EURO Council meetings. The EURO Council has the power to act in all matters in order to realize the objectives of the Association including: Approval of annual accounts and budgets; Election and dismissal of officers; Approval of location and budgets for future EURO-k conferences[2]; Strategic goals such as the adoption of new EURO instruments.
The EURO member societies are Austria[3], Belarus, Belgium[4], Croatia[5], Czech Republic[6], Denmark[7], Estonia[8], Finland[9], France[10], Germany[11], Greece[12], Hungary[13], Iceland[14], Ireland[15], Israel[16], Italy[17], Lithuania[18], The Netherlands[19], Norway, Poland[20], Portugal[21], Serbia, Slovakia[22], Slovenia[23], South Africa, Spain[24], Sweden[25], Switzerland[26], Turkey[27], United Kingdom.
A monthly electronic newsletter is distributed to over 22,000 individuals.
Activities
[edit]EURO publishes scholarly journals and books about Operational Research, and organizes international conferences for academics, professionals, and members of its working groups. It also bestows awards, supports working groups, and organizes educational meetings.
Publications
[edit]EURO publishes 4 scholarly journals[28]:
- European Journal of Operational Research,
- EURO Journal on Computational Optimization,
- EURO Journal on Decision Processes,
- EURO Journal on Transportation and Logistics,
and the book series
- EURO Advanced Tutorials in Operational Research.
All EURO publications are peer-reviewed.
Awards
[edit]EURO bestows a number of prizes[29]:
- EURO Gold Medal. The highest distinction within OR in Europe is conferred for an outstanding contribution to the Operational Research science.
- Distinguished Service Medal Award, a recognition of distinguished service to the association and to the profession of OR.
- Excellence in Practice Award, to recognize outstanding accomplishments in the practice of Operational Research.
- Doctoral Dissertation Award, to recognize the OR contributions of PhD students
- EURO Award for the Best EJOR Papers, to recognize the best articles published on the European Journal of Operational Research.
Conferences
[edit]EURO organizes a number of different conferences and events throughout each year:
- The EURO-k Conferences [30] are broadly oriented and have recently attracted more than 2,000 participants. EURO-k Conferences can be organized in cooperation with other associations such as INFORMS. The latest meeting, the EURO XXVI Conference 2013, was organized as a EURO–INFORMS Joint International Conference in Rome, Italy, and was attended by over 3,500 participants.
- EURO Mini Conferences [31] have the objective of assembling a limited number of specialists around a specific theme. At most two EURO Mini Conferences can be supported each year.
- EWGs Meetings are organized at least once a year by each EURO Working Group.
Working Groups
[edit]EURO Working Groups (EWGs) are the organizational framework provided by EURO to groups of researchers and practitioners interested in a specific Operational Research topic. Each EURO Working Group holds at least one meeting per year, organizes sessions at conferences, publishes feature issues of OR journals, and organizes conferences or seminars. EURO sponsors many European Working Groups (EWGs)[32]:
- EWG MCDA, Multiple Criteria Decision Aiding
- EWG ORAHS, OR Applied to Health Services
- EWG LA, Locational Analysis
- EWG Project Management and Scheduling
- EWG CFM, Commodities and Financial Modelling
- EWG ECCO, European Chapter on Combinatorial Optimization
- EWG-DSS EURO Working Group on Decision Support Systems
- EWG Transportation
- EWG Decision and Negotiation Support
- EWG MODEST, Modelling of Economies and Societies in Transition
- EWG WATT EURO Working Group on Automated Timetabling

Education
[edit]EURO organizes educational meetings throughout each year:
- EURO PhD Schools are an instrument to encourage the organization of post-graduate education initiatives for PhD students under a school format.
- EURO Summer/Winter Institutes provide an opportunity for around 20 early stage researchers to meet for about two weeks. Participants present their material, discuss it with others and with a handful of specially invited senior experts in the field, and finally prepare a paper to be considered for inclusion in a feature issue of EJOR.
- ORP³ Conferences are a forum promoting scientific and social exchanges between members of the future generation of Operational Research in academic research. They are annual or bi-annual meetings of early stage OR researchers organized by early stage researchers in an OR group in Europe.
