Red Papillionaire "Sommer" Model

Papillionaire Bicycles is an Australian and U.S. based bicycle company, founded in 2009 in Melbourne, Australia. The company designs and sells Dutch-style bicycles and is credited by The Age, a Melbourne-based newspaper, as being a significant contributor to the increased usage of this style bicycle.[1] Additionally, Papillionaire sells a wide range of bicycle accessories.

History[edit]

The company was founded by Alan Caras in Melbourne, Australia in 2009, with the aim of developing an affordable dutch style bicycle brand, utlizing modern design and components, for the Australian market. [2]. After twelve months developing the first models, an initial run was produced of 100 bikes.[3] Nicola Baker, Caras' sister, joined the company shortly after. [4] Since then the company has expanded to maintain dedicated stores in Melbourne, Sydney, New York and Singapore, while wholesaling to a large number of stockists around Australia and the USA. [5]

Design[edit]

Papillionaire has three main models, the Classic, Sommer and Mixte, with a wide range of colors, gearing and customization options. [6]. All models are made from lightweight CRMO steel, and incorporate modern components, including Shimano Nexus internal gearing. Papillionaire produces its own line of custom leather grips, saddles, baskets, bags and toe clips. [7]
