H M Sultan Mohideen (born October 31, 1959) is a prominent Indian businessman and gemologist known for his significant contributions to the gems and jewellery industry. He holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry and multiple qualifications from the Gemological Institute of America, including Graduate Gemologist and Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. Mohideen founded Sultan Gems & Fine Jewellery and established the Madras Gem Institute, the first gemological institute in South India. He also initiated India's first Gem Museum in 2018 and has held leadership roles in various industry associations, advocating for the advancement of gemology in India.
Early life
[edit]H M Sultan Mohideen completed his education with notable achievements, earning a B.Sc. in Chemistry from University of Madras in 1980, where he graduated with distinction. In 1982, he obtained a Diploma in Gemstone Cutting from the Gemstone Artisan Training School, ranking first and receiving a Merit Certificate from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. He furthered his studies by becoming a Graduate Gemologist at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Los Angeles in 1983, also ranking first. In 1984, he became a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain and acquired additional diplomas in jewellery retailing and creative jewellery display from GIA.
Business career
[edit]H M Sultan Mohideen is a prominent figure in the gems and jewellery industry, known for his extensive contributions through various enterprises. He founded Sultan Gems & Fine Jewellery, which specializes in designing, manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing, exporting, and importing gems and jewellery. In 1983, he established the Madras Gem Institute (MGI), the first gemological institute in South India, which provides gem and jewellery testing, certification, and evaluation services. MGI also offers consultancy in mining, processing, and marketing of gems and minerals. As an approved valuer for the Ministry of Finance (India), Mohideen has played a crucial role in the industry. Additionally, he founded India's first Gem Museum in 2018, which features an extensive collection of over 580 varieties of gems and minerals. Through his leadership in various industry associations, he has been a strong advocate for the advancement of gemology in India.

[edit]The The Times of India honoured H.M. Sultan Mohideen with the ‘Icons of Tamil Nadu’ Award for excellence in the field of gems and jewellery on 23rd October 2023. The award was presented by Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Minister for School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu.[3]
He was the Guest of Honour at Thailand Gems and Jewellery Fair 2023, Bangkok[4]
