César Cardoso (Leiria, November 10, 1982) is a Portuguese tenor saxophonist, composer, arranger, artistic director and writer in Jazz.

Born in 1982, in Leiria. He attended the Escola de Música do Orfeão de Leiria and completed the 8th degree at the conservatory there in the saxophone class of Alberto Roque.

Between 2004 and 2008 he attended the Escola Luiz Villas-Boas (Escola de Jazz do Hot Clube de Portugal), where he worked with Jorge Reis and Pedro Moreira and began to distinguish himself as a jazz musician, having in May 2008, for example, was the only Portuguese representative in the European Colours Jazz Orchestra.

In 2008 he entered the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, graduating in Jazz Saxophone and continuing to work with Jorge Reis and Pedro Moreira.

He has played with other big names in national and international Jazz, such as João Moreira, Jorge Reis, Claus Nymark, Alexandre Frazão, Bernardo Moreira, Lars Arens, Afonso Pais, Nelson Cascais, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Julian Arguëlles, Maria João, Mário Laginha, Bernardo Sassetti, Zé Eduardo, Perico Sambeat, Rosario Giuliani, Stacey Kent, Benny Golson, John Ellis, Miguel Zenón, Jason Palmer, Guillermo Klein, John Hollenbeck, Joe Lovano, Queen Esther Marrow, Kurt Elling, Maria Schneider among others.

He is a member of the dixieland group Desbundixie Traditional Jazz, with which he recorded “Kick'n Blow” (in 2007) and “Up 2 Nine” (in 2009), the latter with the special participation of Maria João on vocals and Filipe Melo at the piano.[4]

As a composer/arranger, he has performed more than 170 works of Portuguese music, Jazz Standards or World Music for formations such as Big Band and Symphonic Band. Store

He was a member of the Orquestra de Jazz do Hot Clube de Portugal, which released the album “Dança dos Pássaros”, with songs by António Pinho Vargas, 3 of which were arranged by him.[5]

Currently, he is also a professor of Jazz Saxophone, Jazz Theory and Analysis, Ensemble Music and Ear Training at the Universidade de Évora.[6]

  • Interchange (2018): album of originals recorded with his quartet - Bruno Santos (guitar); Demian Cabaud (double bass); André Sousa Machado (drums) - and with Miguel Zenón (alto saxophone) as special guest.[9][10][11][12]
  • Dice of Tenors (2020): album recorded with an Ensemble that brought together musicians Miguel Zenón (alto saxophone), Jason Palmer (trumpet), Massimo Morganti (trombone), Jeffery Davis (vibraphone), Óscar Graça (piano), Demian Cabaud (double bass) and Marcos Cavaleiro (drums) ). This album is a tribute to tenor saxophonists Hank Mobley, Benny Golson, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson, containing 6 Jazz standards made famous by them and 2 original songs. The arrangements of the standards contain new approaches and techniques, with the intention of creating something as if it were a new theme but at the same time without losing the essence of the original.[13][14][15][16]

Books "Teoria do Jazz"

  • In September 2016, he launched the book “Teoria do Jazz”, by Chiado Editora, the first book in Portuguese on Jazz theory, designed as a support manual for Jazz students, filling a gap that existed in Jazz teaching in Portugal.[29][30]
  • In April 2018, he launched the book “Teoria do Jazz – Exercícios”, also by Chiado Editora, which is the implementation of the first volume in a manual of practical exercises in Portuguese.[31]
  • In August 2023, he released the book "Theory of Jazz", by Chiado Books, and is the English translation of the original book in Portuguese.[32]
  • In September 2023, he launched the book "Teoría del Jazz", by Íbera Ediciones, and is the translation into Spanish of the original book in Portuguese.[33]

Orquestra Jazz de Leiria (OJL)

He is the founding mentor and artistic director of the Orquestra Jazz de Leiria, which brings together the jazz community of Leiria, having already performed several concerts with guests, including Vânia Fernandes, David Fonseca, Maria João, Herman José, Luísa Sobral, Áurea, Tiago Bettencourt, Pedro Abrunhosa, Ana Bacalhau, Camané, Sara Tavares, António Zambujo, Jorge Palma, Simone de Oliveira, Miguel Araújo, Salvador Sobral, Carminho, Gisela João, Kurt Elling, Tatanka, Samuel Úria and Maria Schneider.[34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42] In December 2021, in celebration of its ten years of career, OJL released its first album, "Dez", which brings together 14 of these guests and which had the Sony Music label.[26][27]

His album “Interchange” was the subject of a 4-star review by Downbeat magazine.[11][43]

He was the winner of the 1st edition of the International Composition Prize for Clarinet and Big Band of Loures, awarded by the Municipality of Loures, with the piece Groovid. The piece will be premiered at the 1st edition of the LouresJazz Festival, organized by Loures City Council and Clave na Mão, by the Hot Clube de Portugal Big Band, with António Saiote as soloist.[44][45][46][47][48]

His album "Dice of Tenors" was nominated for the "Best Jazz Album" award at the 3rd edition of PLAY - Portuguese Music Awards.[49][50][51][52][53]

In 2023, he became a Henri SELMER Paris artist, the first Portuguese Selmer Artist in the field of jazz saxophone. [54]

In July 2023 he completed his PhD in Music and Musicology, Interpretation variant at the University of Évora, obtaining a doctorate degree with distinction.
