Tiered Instructional Model
The T.I.M. Model also known as the Tiered Instructional Model is a model many educators are using in order to instruct guided reading to their students. At the J.W. Killam Elementary School teachers are using this in the lower elementary grades. The T.I.M. Model looks slightly different at each grade, but the goal for all is to have all students actively engaged in the reading process for at least one hour a day. The instructional groups are “flexible” and change throughout the school year. These groups are designed to support and meet the needs of all children as they learn to read, or continue on their reading journey, as well as understand and apply appropriate grade-level literacy skills.
After analyzing initial literacy assessment data, conducting classroom observations, and using knowledge of the stages of reading development, the students are placed in a “flexible” literacy group based on his/her individual needs and learning style. In Kindergarten the students work in “flexible” groups within their own classroom. In grades 1 through 3, students travel between the classrooms.
During this time, students may meet with a number of different regular education support professionals, including the classroom teacher, the reading specialist, the Title 1 teacher, and reading tutors. The Differentiated Reading Instruction Team meets regularly to monitor student literacy progress
The Tiered Instructional Model is a supportive, classroom instructional model using regular education support staff for K-3 children.
