Philip Auslander is a professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His area of study is heavily focused on the relationship between live performance and digital media. In his award winning book, Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture, he examines “the status of live performance in a culture dominated by mass media”. Auslander also studies such topics as gender and culture in relation to mass media.

Education

Auslander received his bachelor’s with cum laude in the History of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978. He then received his master's in Theatre and Film from the Hunter College at the City University of New York in 1980, followed by his Ph.D. in Theatre and Film from Cornell University in 1983. His masters thesis was entitled A History of Fluxus Performance and his doctorate thesis The Pop Sensibility in Theatre: Plays by the Poets of the New York School.

Work

In 1987, Auslander joined the Georgia Institute of Technology as an assistant professor and, in 1999, became a full professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication.[1] In this department, he has also worked as a Director of Graduate Studies and an advisor for the Performance Studies minor. Internationally, he has traveled as a visiting lecturer and expert at such institutions as the University of Kent and the Free University of Brussels. Auslander’s teaching is centered around performance studies, technology and culture, and digital media. He has also taught classes that discuss such topics as music and film.

Auslander is the author of six published books. In 2000, his book Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture received the Joe A. Callaway Prize for the Best Book on Drama or Theatre. This work analyzes the impact that digitized mass media has had on live performance, and has been a pioneer in the field of study regarding media technology and performance art. He also delves into more specified social topics in such books as Performance Glam Rock: Gender and Theatricality in Popular Music, which explores the shifting social perspectives on gender, sexuality, and performance in the 1970s.

In other literary pursuits, Auslander has worked as both an editor and freelance writer. Bodies in Commotion: Performance and Disability, a book that Auslander co-edited with Carrie Sandahl, received the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Award for Outstanding Book in Theatre Practice and Pedagogy in 2006. Auslander has also written art criticism for the ArtForum International Magazine for over 10 years, and is the founding editor of The Art Section: An Online Journal of Art and Cultural Commentary.

More recently, Auslander has also worked as an actor in the Atlanta film scene and has been featured in over 15 projects. He received actor training from the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and American Academy of Dramatic Arts.[2]
