Etrian Odyssey III: Visitor From Star Ocean, released in Japan as Yggdrasil Labyrinth III: Visitor From Star Ocean (世界樹の迷宮III 星海の来訪者, Sekaiju no Meikyū Hoshimi no Raihoūsha), is a 3D dungeon crawler role-playing video game by Atlus for the Nintendo DS. The title will be released in Japan on April 1, 2010. A release outside of Japan has yet to be announced. Visitor From Star Ocean is the third entry in Etrian Odyssey series. Etrian Odyssey series is well known of its old-school style and difficult adventures. Players play the role of a guild leader, adventuring into the labyrinth to fulfill quests.

Story[edit]

The game is set in a sea city known as Amroad, which is surrounded by the beautiful ocean. Amroad prospered in the ancient time with high-level civilization. However, because of the great earthquake that happened a hundred years ago, the central part of the city sank down into the bottom of the sea, along with its superior technology.[1]

After the "Great Disaster", a labyrinth appeared in the hole of the city created by the earthquake. People from all over the world gathered around Amroad to find clues that will lead them to the vanished city. Adventures ventured down into the enormous hole, which devoured most part of the city and the lost technology. Some sought for the truth behind the "Great Disaster", while the others sought the treasures buried the deepest under the sea.[2]

Gameplay[edit]

Judging by the information that has been released, this game will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors: with one screen showing a 3D view of the Wizardry-style dungeon, while the other one shows an overhead display of the map that players must maintain.

Like its predecessors, the system does not support automatic mapping. Players will make use of a mapping system which lets them freely place icons on a gridded map. These navigation icons can represent sea currents, landmarks, and footnotes of the terrain that players encountered.[3]

One important factor that completes a classic RPG is character classes. In Etrian Odyssey 3, there are no pre-made characters. Players have to build their own guild by creating characters from a number of different character types (classes). Each class has its own skills and their skills complement each other, which makes it quite imaginative when forming a new guild. With no more than five characters in a party at a time, players sometimes might have to change characters to fulfill certain quests.

Character classes [4][5][edit]

Prince(ss)[edit]

Descendants of the royal family. The blood they inherit bestow them power to raise the fighting spirit of the party.

Shinobi[edit]

Users of the technique,“Ninpō”, which is transmitted from ancient times. Their skills are helpful during labyrinth exploration.

Pirate[edit]

People who live on the sea who excells in both guns and swords. Good at working and taking enemies down in group.

Phalanx[edit]

The metal armor which covers the entire body makes them noticeable. Preponderant defensive power and the sharp stick make them good at both defense and offense.

Monk[edit]

Users of the power of qi (energy flow). With qi, they can heal those who are hurt and fight enemies with bare fists.

Warrior[edit]

Pure power fighters who possess well-trained bodies and enormous weapons. They treat their bodies as shields and fight at the front line.

Zodiac[edit]

These zodiac astrologers have the power to collect the element of "ether" that exists among the atmosphere. With that as catalysts, they buries enemies with “star technique/art.”

Ballista[edit]

Ballista are in response of the big bow-gun and the enormous shelling weapon. They are the experts of astern attack.

Beastking[edit]

Mysterious race which have the power to communicate with monsters and make them to fight alongside the player.

Farmer[edit]

Farmers possess abundant skills to help exploring the labyrinth, but are helpless during combat.

Development[edit]

Shigeo Komori, the director of the Etrian Odyssey II and III, told the reasons of adding the "sea" element to the new entry of the series during an interview. Komori said that the image of Etrian Odyssey was a green sea of trees and that of Etrian Odyssey II was the chill sky of North Europe. When he came to think about the theme for the third title, he felt really attracted by the warm southern sea.[6]
