Jean L'Heureux (1540–1614) known as Johannes Macarius (Macaire) was a Flemish Catholic priest and archaeologist who studied the Roman catacombs.

Life[edit]

Gravelines, student of Leopard (Paul Leopardus) at Bergues and canon of Aire en Artois. At the time parts of Spanish Netherlands.

With Philip de Winghe and Alfonso Ciacconio (Chacon), L'Heureux explored the catacombs.^[1] The writings of L'Heureux were published by Raffaele Garrucci.^[2] More broadly de Winghe and L'Heureux were pioneers in the field of sacra archaeologia, with Antonio Bosio. Peiresc kept in touch with their work.^[3]
