Atusko Kohata (born 21 July 1960) is a Japanese television presenter, writer and actor.

Early life and education

Atsuko Kohata was born in Tokyo, Japan. She was educated at schools in Los Angeles and Tokyo, spending 14 years of her childhood and teenage years in the USA and Canada. She studied Fine Arts at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1983.

After a brief career as a working artist, she returned to Japan in 1986.

Career

Kohata began her broadcasting career in 1987 as a bilingual reporter and assistant newscaster for NHK Radio Japan where she presented Japanese culture and news in English. Kohata became the main host for Friday Magazine Hour in 1988. She played the lead role in a radio adaptation of Black Rain, a novel by Masuji Ibuse and substituted for Karuna Shinsho on the topical news TV show, Hello from Tokyo. She also appeared as an actress for the NHK Educational TV Channel 3 language programme, Eikaiwa 1 (English Conversation 1), presented by Kenichi Yoshida.

In 1989, Kohata debuted on Japanese FM radio, J-Wave, substituting for Carol Hisasue’s Morning Show, cross-talking with John Kabira and James Tengan. From 1990 to 1992, Kohata was assistant host on Tokyo FM daily morning show, Ohayo Tokyoite, with Tetsuo Shimizu.

Shortly after the launch of WOWOW in 1990, Kohata was asked to narrate the movie countdown programme, Cinema Cinema Cinema, together with Koichi Yamadera, remaining with that show until 2004.
