The Kingdom of Sordovia is a micronation that was established in 2014 by Samuel Smith. Smith was largely inspired by the acts of Robert Ben Madison, who in 1979 founded the Kingdom of Talossa.

Smith claims most of the state of Oregon as the Sordovian Kingdom. The micronation is divided into five provinces and one incorporated territory. Sordovia has an extremely small population of around 20, despite the nearly 3.8 million people occupying the region that is considered to be "Sordovia", as they are considered as "Oregonians", and not as citizens of the micronation.

Government[edit]

Sordovia is a quasi-constitutional monarchy, composed of a monarch and a bicameral legislature called the Parliament. The relationship between these two powers is akin to the relation shared by the executive and legislative branches of the United States government.

Political System[edit]

The Sordovian legislature is made up of an upper and lower house, referred to as the Parliament and the Council of Governors, respectively. The first step in proposing a bill is to gain the support of a Provincial Governor, who will then bring the proposition before the council assembly. If the bill passes the Council, it is referred to the Parliament, where it is again voted on. Unlike the United States Congress, a bill does not have to be signed by the head of state in order for the document to become law.

An election is held every two years on November 30 to determine the positions of Prime Minister, Members of Parliament, and Provincial Governors. Every citizen, with the exception of the reigning monarch, has a vote regardless of race, creed, or legal standing.

Culture[edit]

Sordovia is known for its peaceful and non-confrontational culture, and attempts to remain neutral whenever possible. However, some violent and even fatal activities are permitted by the government, but are strictly regulated. For example, pistol dueling in legal, but only when the involved parties have signed legal contracts absolving each other of potential manslaughter.

Smith has stated that there is no official state religion present in the micronation, however all citizens and "guests" are encouraged to "freely practice the doctrine of any religion or creed they desire". Despite the lack of an official religion, many religious events are considered to be national holidays, including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, and many others.

The Sordovian national flag, officially titled "Call to the Cosmos", is a simple three-colored flag, adorned with a sinister bends and a white star in the canton. Smith has stated that the blue on the lower right half of the flag is meant to represent the earth, while the block upper half represents the blackness of space. The star represents Polaris, the North Star. In the event of war, the blue and black sections are swapped, the blue is replaced by red, and the flag is turned upside down.

Writing System[edit]

Sordovia is also known for its odd writing system, which consists of a twenty-eight letter alphabet. As stated on the official Sordovian website, there is no specialized spoken language of Sordovia, yet there is a written alphabet which is composed of glyphs from several different scripts, including Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic. Additionally, users of the system are encouraged to use the letters Þ and Ð instead of the digraph "th".
