Yohji Yamamoto[edit]

Yohji Yamamoto was born in the city of Tokyo, Japan on October 3rd, 1943. He is most credited for his work as a fashion designer, as well as his accomplishments through out his career. Yamamoto's designs of garments and tailored apparel are considered to be an "avant garde" style. His unique style can be seen amongst his creations. His clothes differ from other designers because they are luxurious, complex, and consist of neutral shades. His custom garments and costumes have been featured in various fashion shows as well as other events, exhibitions, and magazines. With the launch of his first collection he was able to start his career in garment making and would continue to produce seasonal apparel, accessories, and other art pieces.

Limi Feu[edit]

Yohji Yamamoto's only child, Limi Feu (1974), followed her fathers career path as a well known fashion designer. Feu began her career by obtaining her own label in the year 2000. Her collections consist of similar styles to that of her fathers. She also portrayed similar aesthetics in her designs by using darker and more neutral colors. They continue to create innovative garments consist of unique patterns and layering of fabric.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Prior to designing, Yohji Yamamoto graduated from Keio University (Tokyo, Japan), with a degree in law in 1966. However, after traveling to Paris, he abandoned his legal career to assist his mother in her dressmaking business. Yohji Yamamoto became skilled in tailoring, and later pursued a degree in fashion design at Bunka Fashion College (Shinjuku, Tokyo). He then graduated, now with his second degree, in 1969. In the year 2008, Yohji Yamamoto was further rewarded by receiving an honorary degree from the University of the Arts, London.

Designs and Work[edit]

Yohji Yamamoto's style and purpose evolved overtime as he became more experienced with design and tailoring. His first collection focused on garments for women that reflected styles of men's garments, with clothes designed in unique patterns, shapes, and dark colors. The collection also consisted of layered clothing and loose-fitting styles. Yamamoto's collections vary in textures, fabric, and are primarily produced in shades of black. He claimed that using black as the primary color for collections is “modest and arrogant at the same time". Yohji Yamamotos' garments and other work is available to the public, and can be purchase on his website. Each season he establishes new collections and styles. His daughters work is also available on his online shop.
