McKelvie started in comics in 2003, doing work as an art assistant and lettering with other artists. His work included lettering and colouring the online versions of Chynna Clugston Flores' Blue Monday, and work on Too Much Hopeless Savages with artist Christine Norrie [1]. That year, he also started working with Kieron Gillen on a comic strip entitled Save Point for the official PlayStation Magazine UK, which ran for at least three years. [1] [2][3]. Later that year, McKelvie met Eric Stephenson in San Diego Comic Con, which led to two publications in 2005 - Loss, with writer Amber Benson, as his first published work featuring in the Four Letter Worlds anthology, followed by a graphic novel with Stephenson, Long Hot Summer, published later that year.

McKelvie's first limited series as artist was Phonogram which ran for six issues starting in 2006, and saw him continue collaborating with Gillen. This was followed by his first creator-owned series as both writer and artist, Suburban Glamour, published in 2008, with Guy Major and Matt Wilson as colourists. McKelvie has continued to collaborate with Gillen and Wilson: on two sequel series to Phonogram in 2008-10 and 2015.

The three collaborated on a relaunch of Young Avengers for Marvel in 2013

Following Young Avengers, the creative team launched The Wicked + The Divine in 2014 and are currently working on it.

He has done various work for Marvel Comics, including the X-Men: Season One graphic novel with Dennis Hopeless, four issues of Defenders with Matt Fraction, single issues featuring characters such as Iron Man, Spider-man, Loki, Nightcrawler and Cable and a number of covers for other series.

Outside of comics, McKelvie has done illustration work for book covers, including two novels by writer Mur Lafferty[2], for music releases, including for Art Brut album's Brilliant! Tragic! and single Lost Weekend.[3][4][5], and for videos games, including Kudos 2.[6] McKelvie has collaborated for a number of years with the Scottish band Chvrches, including prints and t-shirt designs, leading to him directing and animating the music video for Bury It in 2016.[7][8]

Character design[edit]

McKelvie has redesigned a number of characters' costumes. This includes the 2012 redesign of long-time character Carol Danvers, for a relaunch of the character as the new Captain Marvel.[9] Subsequently, in late 2013, the design for Kamala Khan's outfit when she becomes Ms Marvel was unveiled.[10] He has also made available his personal takes on Wonder Woman,[11] Iron Man[12] and Cyclops.[13]

McKelvie has said that he emphasises practicality when creating his Marvel designs, stating that he considers the "message a [..] character's design is putting across",[14] and specifically for Ms. Marvel, the design reflects "the Captain Marvel legacy, and also her story and her background".[15]
