Lyanna Stark is a fictional character in the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and fire by American author George R. R. Martin and its television adaptation Game of Thrones where she is portrayed by the Irish actress Aisling Franciosi and by the British actress Cordelia Hill as a child. Lyanna is mentioned by several POV (Point-of-view) characters in the novels since A Game of Thrones (1996). Both in the television adaptation and the books, Lyanna only appears in visions or dreams, since the character died years before their main story begun[citation needed].

She was a noblewoman of House Stark of Winterfell and the only daughter of Lord Rickard Stark and his wife Lyarra Stark, she had two older siblings, Brandon and Eddard Stark, and a younger one, Benjen. In 282 AC, near Harrenhal, Crown prince Rhaegar Targaryen abducted Lyanna, this event ultimately caused Robert´s Rebellion and the end of Targaryen rule on the Seven Kingdoms.

Description[edit]

Early Life[edit]

Lyanna Stark was born in Winterfell, the daughter and third child of Lyarra Stark and Lord Rickard Stark, Lyarra Stark was also Rickard´s cousin. Lyanna´s early life is not stated in neither the books nor the television show. when her brother Eddard was sent to the Eyrie to be fostered by Lord Jon Arryn together with the heir of the Stormlands, Robert Baratheon, he came back to Winterfell with proposal to betroth Robert Baratheon and Lyanna Stark, the proposal was accepted by Rickard. Lyanna however, was against the betrothal, since it was known Robert´s infidelity.

Appearance and personality[edit]

Lyanna was said to be beautiful[1], she was considered independent and wild[2], as her father claimed that she had "wolf blood". She was fond of winter roses[3], and had been a great rider[4], being described by some as being "half-horse".

Background[edit]

In the year of the False Spring, a tourney was held by Lord Whent to celebrate the nameday of his daughter, it was said to have been the greatest tourney of living memory, Lyanna and her siblings went to tourney, during one of the celebrations, Prince Rhaegar was singing, and after the song, Lyanna cried, and her younger brother teased her, causing her to pour wine over Benjen´s head.

During the tourney, a mystery knight called "The Knight of the Laughing Tree" entered the jousts, the name came from their shield, which had a weirwood with a laughing face on it, the knight won many tilts, and only asked in return that the defeated knight´s squires be disciplined. The king, Aerys II, thought that the laughing face in the shield was laughing at him, he sent men, including his heir, Rhaegar, but none found the identity the mystery knight

The A Song of Ice and Fire fandom is divided about the identity of the Knight of the Laughing Tree[5], however, Lyanna Stark is believed to be the most likely candidate, although George R. R. Martin has not confirmed any of these theories.

At the end of the jousts, the prince Rhaegar won and chose Lyanna as "Queen of Love and Beauty" putting a garland of blue roses in her lap, the reaction of this event outraged the lords in the tourney, because not only the prince was already married (with Princess Elia Nymeros Martell) who was present at the tournament, but also that Lyanna was already betrothed to Robert.

Robert´s Rebellion[edit]

After a year, ten leagues from Harrenhal, she came into contact with the Targaryen prince, which, with the help of Ser Oswell Whent and Ser Arthur Dayne, knights of the Kingsguard, abducted Lyanna. When her brother Brandon Stark went to Riverrun to wed Hoster Tully´s daughter Catelyn, he learned of Lyanna´s abduction, the heir to Winterfell traveled to King´s Landing to demand justice for Lyanna, Aerys II, also known as the Mad King, arrested Brandon and his companions and demanded that their fathers went to answer for the crimes of their offspring. When Lord Rickard Stark came to the Red Keep, he demanded a trial by combat, the king accepted, and chose "fire" as his champion, the Warden of the North was burned alive while suspended from rafters, Brandon, who was also in suspended, strangled himself while trying to pick his longsword to save his father. After the incident, the Mad King demanded the heads of Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark, the lord who had fostered both of them, Jon Arryn, raised his banners to war, signaling the start of Robert´s Rebellion.
