North Runnymede United Church began in 1913 as Scarlett Plains Methodist Church of Canada. The original sanctuary now houses the City of Toronto's David Appleton Community Centre, while church services are now held in the new sanctuary, opened in 1963. The building is also home to the Syme55+ Centre and, since 1923 has been the primary meeting place of Scouts Canada's 68th Toronto Scout Group.
History
[edit]The church was located at the northern border of the 1914 Humber Valley Extension, a development area that included the areas of Swansea, Runnymede, Humber Bay and part of Lambton Mills. As a result of the population growth, the building was extended in 1929, 1957, and finally 1963.
In 1925, the congregation voted to join the newly formed United Church of Canada.
