Beyond Competition is a book written by Sid Sackson and published in 1977 by Pantheon Books, a division of Random House. It contains six original games designed by Sackson, who was a well-known American game designer, collector and author.
Sackson created the book to provide a selection of pencil-and-paper games in which two or more players would win or lose together through cooperation aimed at achieving a common, worthwhile goal or purpose. In his opening remarks in the book, he indicated his purpose was to create games that would be fun, "But on this ever-shrinking earth, unless all peoples learn to play the important games cooperatively so that all can win, all will certainly lose."
The six games included in the book are:
- Space Explorer (the objective of which is to visit all the planets in the Solar System and return to Earth without running out of fuel)
- Resources (the purpose of which is divide a pool of available resources as evenly as possible among the players)
- Rescue (a race against time to reach and rescue from danger as many persons as possible)
- Peace Conference (Goal: to reach a level of peaceful agreement before a disaster countdown timer reaches zero)
- Search (a search through a haunted house in search of a mysterious substance called "dots" while avoiding gathering too many more than your fellow players)
- Round 'N Round (moving around an oval attempting to create lines of four differently colored spaces while avoiding the same color touching in adjacent lanes)
