David A. Jolliffe is a renowned rhetorician and creator of the famed Jolliffe chart, the rhetorical diagram upon which modern language and composition is based. He is a professor of English Literacy Theory and the History and Theory of Rhetoric at the Folbright College of Arts and Sciences, University of Arkansas. The official AP (advance placement) grader of the AP English Language and Composition exam, he was awarded the Brown Chair in English Literacy in 2005 by Dean Donald Bobbitt.

The Jolliffe chart is a connection between rhetorical components such as imagery/diction to tone, the author's purpose, ethos, pathos, logos: Exigence --> Audience --> Purpose --> Logos --> Ethos, Tone, and Pathos --> Organization/Structure/Form --> Diction, Syntax, Imagery, Figurative Language
