Marvin Ridge High School[edit]

Marvin Ridge High School (commonly Marvin, Marvin Ridge, or MRHS) is a public secondary school in Waxhaw, North Carolina, USA serving students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Union County Public School system (UCPS). Marvin Ridge High School is a two story building with a full auditorium and fully air-conditioned gym. Admissions is based primarily on the location of students’ homes and district lines. Marvin Ridge High was No. 1 among the 300-399 cohort size for having a 99.3 percent graduation rate in North Carolina.[1]

History[edit]

Founded in 2007 [2]) as the Marvin Ridge Mavericks with school colors orange and blue[3], this new high school was built to reduce overcrowding in a neighboring high school Weddington taking about half of the student body and transferring them to the new school.[4] The school currently has approximately 1200 students with class sizes that average from about 18 to 31 students. [5]


Marvin Ridge High School serves neighborhoods in the Marvin, NC and Waxhaw, NC areas. Three elementary schools feed into Marvin Ridge High School including Rea View Elementary, Marvin Elementary, and Sandy Ridge Elementary. Only Marvin Ridge Middle School feeds into Marvin Ridge High School.


Diversity[edit]

Marvin Ridge is ranked a ten out of ten on the “Great Schools” website [6] However, the diversity rates tend to be less than the state average for every ethnicity with the exception of white/caucasion. There are 84% White students, 10% Black, 4% Hispanic, 2% Asian or Pacific Islander, and less than 1% American Indian or Alaskan Native. [7]

Expenditure[edit]

The district in which Marvin Ridge subsides the regulated budget is $6,953 which is $1,000 less than the state average. About 65% of the budget is spent for instructional purposes, 9% for student and staff support, 8% for administration, and 18% for other expenditures. [8]

Academics[edit]

Marvin ridge operates on an 8:00 am to 2:55 pm schedule which includes four ninety minute periods with a five minute grace period and break for lunch during the third period. There are four lunch times all a half hour long.[9]


Marvin Ridge High was named a North Carolina Honor School of Excellence with High Growth in 2009-2010. The school has a college preparatory as it offers a variety of Honors and Advanced Placement classes as well as having the only International Baccalaureate Diploma program in the Union County schools. [10] EOC results for the senior class of 2010 for Marvin Ridge was above district and state averages in every subject. Marvin Ridge actually had a 100% passing rate in Biology, Civics and Economics, U.S. History, and English 101. [11]


Marvin Ridge was named the Honor School of Excellence for 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 by the State Department of Education for having a 91.3% or higher average on EOC tests. Thus far the school has also met all Adequate Yearly Progress goals under the No Child Left Behind guidelines. Marvin Ridge also has the Highest English II Writing Scores in 2008-2009 in Union County


Marvin Ridge is currently the only approved International Baccalaureate World School. This school also offers nineteen Advanced Placement courses, five foreign languages (Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and Latin). The Distance Learning Program is also offered through the internet through Odyssey-ware. [12]

Cross Country and Track

Cross Country and Track have earned twelve Union County Championships, twelve Conference Championships, four Regional Championships, and one State Championship.


The girls cross country team has won Conference Championships in 2007 and 2009, been regional runner-up in 2008 and 2009, and finished within in top ten at the NCHSAA State Championship Meet 3 times and even finishing in 3rd place finish in 2009. The boys cross country team has won Union County Championships in 2008 and 2009, Conference Championships in 2008 and 2009, and Regional Championships in 2008 and 2009. On the State level, the boys team finished 3rd at the NCHSAA 3A State Championship meet in 2008 and 4th in 2009.[13]


In 2010-2011 the Girls Indoor Track finished as the runners-up at the N.C. 1A/2A/3A girls’ track championships by just two points. Senior Tynaya Walker scored two points in the 55 meter dash; Juniors Taylor Dove, Anna Lipocky, Brittany Fritz, and Taylor Berry scored ten points in the 1,600 meter relay; and eight more points were scored by the 3,200 meter relay team of Brittany Fritz, Caitlyn Colo, Ailish Dwyer, and Alden Kessenich. Taylor Berry scored abother four points in the 500 meter dash and Caitlyn Colo took eighth in the 1,000 meters earning one point. Sarah Fell and Hannah Frederick placed fourth and fifth in the pole vault together earning nine points.[14]

In the 2009-2010 school year the Maverick Cheerleaders won the State Championship [15]


Women's Soccer

The Marvin Ridge Maverick Women's Soccer team has wont the conference championship four years in a row. They have also been named as the State Championship Runner-ups twice. [16] In 2010 Marvin Ridge finished their season with a perfect score of 24-0 winning the NCHSSA women’s soccer title. All season The Mavericks only allowed 4 goals all season. [17]

Wachovia Cup


2011-Marvin Ridge won the conference Wachovia cup for 3-A schools, but placed third in the final standings with 487.5 points


2010- Marvin Ridge won the conference Wachovia cup for 3-A schools, but placed fourth in the final standings with 565 points


2009- Marvin Ridge won the conference Wachovia cup for 3-A scools, but placed fourth in the final standings with 387.5 points


2008- Marvin Ridge won the conference Wachovia Cup [18]

Deca

Deca is the largest chapter in North Carolina, sponsored by Hiliary Steere


Speech and Debate In 2011 the Marvin Ridge Speech and Debate team kept their title for Dramatic Interpretation Champions for the second year in a row. With 168 points the Speech and Debate team placed as the second best Speech and Debate team in the state. 150 of those points were from Interpretation Events making the mavericks the best in the state in Speech Events. Theatre[edit]

The Marvin Ridge Theatre Arts program seeks to offer a fun, quality, learning experience in acting, directing, playwrighting, technical theatre, and dramaturgy. The Theatre arts classes offered are as follows and taught by Benjamin Winston Sims:


Theatre I: An introduction to all areas of theatre; especially beneficial to students who appreciate theatre, but are still trying to find what really interests them. Topics include acting, directing, play-writing, technical theatre and dramaturgy.


Theatre II: (Prereq: TA I) Thoroughly explores the history of theatre from around the world. Topics include stage combat, improvisation and the study of other cultures.


Theatre III: (Prereq: TA II or Tech Theatre II) Honors level class that explores advanced theatre topics like the history of Broadway and musical theatre, puppetry and performing for young audiences.


Acting: (Prereq: TA I & II) Designed to develop students into more well-rounded performers, covering acting, singing and dancing.


Technical Theatre: A very hands-on class that thoroughly covers all areas of technical theatre (sets, lights, sound, props, costumes and makeup), and will be a vital part of mounting school productions.


Independent Study in Theatre Arts An offering to students with special circumstances in scheduling. The class is tailored to the student’s individual interests in theatre.


Marvin Ridge has put on a number of productions : [21]


For the past two years Marvin Ridge has participated in a theatre competition known as the North Carolina Theatre Conference where theatre groups come from all around the state to compete at local colleges. In 2010 Marvin Ridge entered this contest for the first time with “Once Upon a Playground” earning the award for “Excellence in Ensemble”. After competing a second time in 2011 with “The Cave” the Performers came back with a reward for “Excellence in Design and Use of Masks”. (http://www.nctc.org/events/hs_festival.php) The Theatre Department also consists of an improvisational group “Check”. This improvisation troupe entered the Olympics in Rock Hill on March 19th, 2011 and won first place. The members consist of: John and Kelly Pope, Olivia and Mera Liccione, Dara and Roya Fazelnia, Luke Miller, Arthur Morris, Lauren Kelley, Heather Miller, Matt Roper, Rebecca Shrom, Aleesia Gillis and Nathan Bailey. Choir[edit]

The Marvin Ridge Choir, led by Deborah Lutz, performed at the Carnegie Hall in the spring of 2011. The students rehearsed three times a week after school to be prepared mentally, physical, and emotionally. This choic is made up of Kevin Satterfiled, Breanna Moe, Renee Russo, Rachael Broom, Christine Rardin, Madison Dill, Madeleine Cutrone, Katherine Judge, Stefania Crovesi, Brianna Harrington, Christian Smith, Katherine Rowland, Jordan Hodges, Emily McFadden, Starr Peterson, and Jeremy Jones. Administration[edit]

David Dahari, a Marvin Ridge High School teacher, was named as Union County’s 2009-2010 Teacher of the Year. Dahari, a nine-year veteran teacher, teaches Chemistry and Physics. The announcement was made April 30th, 2009 at the UCPS Teacher of the Year Banquet where Dahari stated,"I was so humbled and honored to be named the Marvin Ridge High School Teacher of the Year. And now to be named the Union County Public Schools Teacher of the Year is amazing.” [24] Seven months later on December 18th, 2009, it was announced that David Dahari was chosen as the 2010 Southwest Regional Teacher of the Year. Upon his recognition, Dahari received a sanding ovation from a gym full of students, staff, and elected officials. The Superintendent Ed Davis said “Mr. David Dahari truly exemplifies all those qualities we look for in the brightest and best of our teachers today. Teaching is a very noble profession. It’s a difficult and rewarding job. He embraces it with a spirit of enthusiasm that is rarely matched.”[25]


Mr. Ray Fumo is the Head Men’s and Women’s soccer coach at Marvin Ridge High School in Union County. He has had 20 years of coaching experience for men and 13 for women. His overall Men’s head coach record is 288-123-36 and his overall Women’s head coach record is 201-58-18. Coach Fumo has been named Men’s Conference Coach of the Year eight times and women’s nine times, as well as being named Regional coach of the year twice for men, and six times for women. He has also been named as the women’s North Carolina State Coach of the Year once as well ad the Head Women’s Coach of the East/West All Star Game. Mr. Fumo had a bachelors in Social Studies from Rider University and a masters in Social Studies from the College of New Jersey. [26])


Cameron Starr is the head coach of the Cross Country and Track and Field Teams at Marvin Ridge. He has been coaching since the school opened in 2007. He previously coached Track and Field at Weddington High School, and Kutztown High School. Coach Starr has been named Conference Coach of the Year six times, twice for track and field and four times in cross country. The Charlotte Observer also named him the All-Piedmont Girl;s Cross Country coach in 2008-2009. Starr has a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Kutztown University where he also competed on their Cross Country team. [27]
