FJAAK (pronounced fjak) are a German electronic music duo based in Berlin. Formed in the city’s district of Spandau where the members grew up together.[1] The duo perform techno principally as a live act but have also produced a large discography of original music.[1]
History
[edit]Formation and Name Origin
[edit]Felix Wagner, Johannes Wagner, Aaron Robig and Kevin Kozicki all grew up together in Spandau, a city district in western Berlin and have been making music since their childhood.[2] In 2009, the four of them formed FJAAK, creating the name by taking the first letters from the first names of the four founding members (Felix, Johannes, Aaron and Kevin).[3] Johannes left early on in the group's history, (a precise date for his departure cannot be found) with his departure making FJAAK a three-piece.[3] After Kevin left in 2019 to focus on a solo career, the group became a duo consisting of Felix and Aaron and has remained that way since.[4]
History
[edit]In 2012, the trio released their first EP titled “Introduction” on Baalsaal records.[2]
In 2013, the trio released their first vinyl, “Remember me” on Klasse Recordings with another single, “Mind Games” also released on vinyl through Baalsaal.[2]
In 2015, FJAAK signed to the Modeselektors imprint 50 Weapons, releasing a number of singles on the label.[2]
Musical Style and Performance
[edit]FJAAK produce techno, a genre that has been significant to Berlin since the collapse of the berlin wall.[5] However, FJAAK also incorporate many breakbeat and jungle elements in their songs which are influenced by the rave culture of the UK.[6] Frequently described as hardware heads, FJAAK’s instrumentals are primarily produced using analogue equipment.[7] In the past, they would go so far as to record instruments in jam sessions to create tracks, but in more recent years, they have ported these sounds into DAWs for arrangement.[1]
FJAAK perform many live shows, regularly playing at clubs and festivals. They are frequent performing DJs at Berghain.[8]
Relationship with Cannabis
[edit]Discovering cannabis between the ages of 16 and 17, FJAAK are open about their use of cannabis, featuring the drug frequently in social media posts.[9] Felix Wagner himself has a German based legal prescription and a medical card.[10] This allows him to order cannabis at a pharmacy, have cannabis delivered to his house, and also always him to carry up to 15 grams of cannabis throughout the Schengen Area.[10] FJAAK use cannabis in conjunction with music production as an aid, in an interview with dope magazine, they said:
“In the early stages of our musical project(s) we started to use it [cannabis] whilst we were working. It opens our minds and helps us delve deeper into our material. We can follow the same flow for hours on and on throughout day and night until we achieve something. It all depends on personal preference and tolerance because for some people it can be horrible to work on anything while they’re under the influence of cannabis, whilst others seem to reach their full creative potential.” [9]
